Strangest new student questions you've been asked

Postby GrahamB on Wed Aug 27, 2008 8:03 am

So anyone here who runs a class - what are the most memorable questions you've been asked by prospective students?

I just got asked "How much are your uniforms?" - I'm like, wtf??!??! ;D

Not a question, but I once had a student who showed up reeking of booze. I don't object to drinking, or even drinking to excess, but seeing somebody who obviously thought it was OK show up at class inebriated was a true WTF moment ...

Yeah, I had one of those once. They guy obviously had problems, but he actually trained very diligently (if a little "in a world of his own") and didn't bother anyone else, except for the smell of booze. He didn't come back anyway, so I never had to confront him about it.

Once a middle-aged guy came in and asked my teacher:"Do you teach sexual tai chi?"

The other day I was asked "Do you work with energy?"

How do you answer that? No, I don't use any energy at all, in fact, I can barely stand up, look how limp and lifeless my arms are, and my legs - just look at them! No Energy! ;D

Not a question but more of a request--this girl comes up and says "I want to learn how to kill people". Seriously.

"you aren't chinese"

to which i replied - "no i am not"

and they never came back for a second class

I can understand the uniform question, since most mcdojo's require you to buy one as part of the sign up fee.

We use the Juka Dragon uniforms. They sometimes get ripped too but they are tough enough for most things. I don't really see how having uniforms makes a place a McDojo, guess my shuai jiao jacket makes me a mcdojo student then too.

I get asked questions over the phone from people.

Usually asking how long it is going to take to get a black belt in Jiulong Baguazhang or Iron Palm.

That's not what he implied. Since a lot of people know MAs from McDojos, they are likely to inquire about the price of a uniform. In fact most n00bs expect to wear uniforms.
