Discussion on the three big Chinese internals, Yiquan, Bajiquan, Piguazhang and other similar styles.

looking for Cheng bagua photos

Postby mixjourneyman on Thu Sep 18, 2008 8:58 am

We have all seen the multitudes of photos of Cheng Youxin that have been floating around the interwebs, but I'm interested in seeing photos of other oldschool masters practicing.
Anyone know where I can find some images of Cheng Youlong, Luo (?, can't remember his full name, but he was Liu Jingru's main teacher), or Sun Xikun (I had borrowed a book by Sun from my teacher, so I know most of the pictures, but if anyone else knows of some that aren't in the book, that would be great!), anyone else from that period from Cheng style?.

Best

Pictures of Cheng Youlong are mostly those in Sun Xikun's book, I think.

Liu Jingru has published photos of his teacher Luo Xingwu in his many books as well (as well as pictures of Cheng Youxin).

I remember a rare picture of Sun Xikun that Dave C. had on his blog (Formosa Neijia).

There are lots more on the Web as well, of course.

Uh oh... I think you just killed that site, D_Glenn... (Chinese sites aren't known for being able to handle EF-levels of bandwidth) :)

D_Glenn, thanks, that sight is really good.
Its interesting to contrast the palm posture of Cheng youlong against the one I was taught through his lineage. They are much different (Cheng's palms are much more straight up and down, plus the fingers are much closer together). I wonder what accounts for the difference (maybe it got changed in the second generation, or perhaps Cheng had more than one palm posture for the millstone pushing palm).

What do you mean by "straight up and down?"

Well, in our version of CYL's bagua we have the middle, ring, and pinkie fingers curled down. It appears that CYL has his pretty much vertical. It looks closer to what we call Cheng Youxin's posture, except still even a little straighter than that.

Oh, okay. I do think that the curl in the fingers is more common today (although not the only way); maybe Cheng changed it for the cameras :D

Ya, I don't know.
Since we really don't have an accurate record of how the old masters practiced, all we can judge by is photos and old texts.
