How heavy are the large Bagua Broadswords?

Postby Royal Dragon on Sat Sep 27, 2008 8:40 pm

I have heard the Bagua broadswords can be as much as 90 to 120 pounds.

My question is this, how heavy are these swords really, what are thier dimensions (assuming they are 90-120 pounds) and are these one hand, or two handed weapons?

That sounds like a misprint. The heaviest one I have is almost 10lbs and it's a bear, it sprains most people's wrists, it's not really feasible that they go beyond 10, not to mention that the sword has to be balanced, this 10 pounder has a ridiculously large blade, maybe you could go up to 12 lbs max if you worked up to it and if the sword could be made and balanced. The normal and realistically usable one I have is about 7 lbs and it's the perfect weight.

I think the ones my teacher sells are around five or six pounds, but I think that is somewhat light as far as bagua daos go.

A "Zweihander" (you know, those huge German twohanded swords from the Renaissance period) weighs around 6-7kg, that would be about 12-14 lbs. So I doubt the Bagua broadsword, which is often held in one hand would be heavier than that. A lot lighter, more likely.

The Da Dao wil be up to a humongous 120 cm long, more or less. Mine weighs slightly under 3 kgs and sometimes I feel I can hardly move it at all! The usual Dao, the one-handed one, is probably around 2 to 2 1/22pounds (umder 1 kg). I've heard that some Bagua Dadao were made heavier for training purposes.

I've got that one too. It is very well balanced so it's not a wrist breaker at all.

for the record the average weight of a zweihander was about 7 pounds.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zweih%C3%A4nder

You can find replicas of them on most major sword sites, and the heaviest I have ever seen was 8 pounds. As the wikipedia article mentions, there were heavier ones, sometimes referred to as "bearer swords", but these were used only in parades, and for other ceremonial purposes.

Hmm, I thought I got that weight from a museum collection book (Austrian, so it's not a lbs-kg error). Coulb be that it was a parade piece, I'll check when I get home.

Ok. Brain fart. Book lists sizes (176cm in this case) but not weight.
