Yang Luchan's <Taiji Changquan 108 set>

Discussion on the three big Chinese internals, Yiquan, Bajiquan, Piguazhang and other similar styles.

Yang Luchan's <Taiji Changquan 108 set>

Postby Yuen-Ming on Sat Oct 11, 2008 6:10 am

This is the original quanpu (list of moves) of the first set listed in Yang Luchan's manual.
Some of the material from YLC's original curriculum has been lost, or at least I have been unable to find anybody still practicing it, but a big part of it has been passed down to the actual generations.

Sorry - not too familiar with Banhou's lineage, who is out there in Yongnian? Any well-known folks?

Here is the site of Yang Zhen He from Yongnian. He teaches a 108 Ban Hou form, as well as a more main stream Yang Cheng Fu version:

Hello Sean,

the site doesn't refer to a specific "108 Banhou set" but only to a "old frame Banhou set".

Considering that Yang Zhenghe studied with Cui Wenzhang and Yang Zhengduo he couldn't possibly know the "108 changquan" per the subject.
Cui studied Wu/Hao style and some Yang style under Yang Zhaolin, Yang Zhengduo some Yang style in the line of his father. None of the two lines, for as much as I know, practice the 108 changquan.

Yeun-Ming,

Who in Yongnian practices/teaches this "108 changquan"? Would love to see a performance of it, too.

Cheers,
Sean

As I think I said in the other thread, my impression is that this early '108 changquan' is lost in Yongnian.
Or at least I was unable to find anybody who could do it.

It is just a list of moves, with a few indications of how to perform them.
This list is the same that appears in Chen family documents and also basically the same as one Tongbei 108 set.

Hello Tom,

it is not the same set.
This 108 Tongbei set was first published in 1936 by Fan Yigui (1858-1952) in a book called "Zhongyi Quan Kaotu Ben"
http://www.soonup.com/index.php/14317/a ... _8310.html
Tang Hao, in his book 行健齋隨筆 reports the same from the Chen village manual.
Similarities and common origins have been discussed for a while in chinese publications.

Yeun-Ming,

It would still be interesting to see that quan pu in English for those of us whose Chinese is, well, limited! And, do you yourself practice this 108 set?

Sorry but I don't have time or will to translate a list of moves.
I have never seen or practiced this set.

Here's a claimed Chen rendition of the said 108 changquan which follows almost exactly the quanpu sequence
