RBSD Vs. Georges St Pierre

Just got this in my inbox from UKFIghtLab.

Interesting perspective...I was agreeably surprised at the chap's honesty.

See the part highlighted...

Dear Andrew,

Yesterday, Stewart Mcgill, one of the
UK's very foremost Krav Maga practitioners,
started to give us his views on whether MMA
training helps in the world of street self
defence...

Today, Stewart continues giving us his views
on the subject...

"Training in MMA is also very good in
developing defences against being taken down
in a real fight, and how to respond defensively
to someone dropping you like this...

Knowing how to fall safely, breathe properly
with somebody's body weight on your chest,
position your arms and neck to avoid arm bars
or strangulation, stop the guy going into a
full mount etc. constitute a range of skills
that are pretty damned important - particularly
with the growing popularity of the grappling
arts since the rise of the 'Ultimate Fighting
Championship'.

From my point of view, the bottom line is this:
would I feel confident being taken to ground
in a row with George St Pierre if I were allowed
to bite, butt, squeeze his groin, stick fingers
into his eyes and pull out a concealed blade
if the going got rough, whilst St Pierre had
to stuck to MMA rules?

The answer is NO - having seen him fight and
the way he takes people down, I'd take a few
seconds to recover from the impact - particularly
on concrete or a bar room floor - and in that
time he'd probably have broken something or
choked me out...

Maybe my mates could join in after this point
and smack him around the head with a barstool
but this WOULDN'T do me a lot of good.

Fighting St Pierre may be an extreme example
but the point remains: if your ground game is
limited and you don't train it with the aggressive
shock of a serious takedown and subsequent attack,
don't believe that you're going to come out on
top just because you will not be restrained by
MMA rules."

Most definitely true. A takedown meant to do damage doesn't care where it's happening, and the ground n' pound was effective in the real world long before MMA ever heard of it. Even with a weapon on you, if you don't have it presented and ready to kill, it won't do you a damn bit of good in your pocket.
