Speed Testing Game

Speed Testing Game

Postby johnwang on Mon Jan 12, 2015 10:18 pm

Both persons will start from a "spring ready" position and stay outside of the kicking range.

If

- any of your opponent's hands can touch on your head (a light touch will be enough. It's testing for speed and not testing for power), he gets 1 point.
- both of your hands can pass through next to his head (since you are not striking any target, it will be safe for your opponent), you get 1 point.

The simple rule set is when one person moves in, the other person has to move in at the same time. If the other person moves back, he will lost 1 point. It's like the "Renaissance Festival spear fight". You and your opponent may only have one shot in that full speed commitment. You will either get 1 point, or lose 1 point.

Try this for 20 rounds, record the result. What's your opinion on this game?

I like it. I have done similar "games" before, generally starting from an outside contact.

interesting version. I'll have to try it. I have a couple of similar games that I get people to do. One is empty handed, occasionally done as a warm up, where the only targets that count are slapping the other person's shoulders or front of chest. The other (which is done with weapons) allows one person to hit anywhere, whereas the other must strike to the torso or face mask (arms and legs don't count). I hadn't thought to restrict them from stepping backward for those though.

Regarding stepping back, my friend Antony Wood... who posts on here sometimes too... has a drill I love, you stand back against the wall and have someone attack you. Initially you are only allowed to defend, but after you get used to it, you start to look for opportunities to move forward and throw a barrage of attacks back.

Not exactly speed related per se, just it occurred to me suddenly

One of the praying mantis master Brendan Lai's favor speed games was:

- A and B both stand with right leg forward.
- A uses leading right hand to touch B's back left shoulder.
- B tries to use right hand to block A's attack.

He also told me that he liked to train his speed right after shower. If he could throw one kick and all the water on his leg were gone, he knew he had speed. If his leg was still wet, he would need to train more.

In Brendan Lai's speed game, did it matter which way you touched the left shoulder (i.e. through your opponent's front side or back side)?

Thanks!

Your hand has to go through your opponent's front side, the center line, pass his 1st gate (right wrist area), his 2nd gate (right elbow area), and then reach to his 3rd gate (left shoulder area). Your hand has to move much farther distance than your opponent's right hand has. But since you move first and he responds afterward, that's your advantage.

There is a drill in French fencing that you might like, Johnwang. It is called the glove drill. We have no swords, only fencing gloves. We take them off, and if you can slap me with your glove you are the winner. You may go forward or back.

Cultural note. Slapping someone with a glove is a culturally loaded act in Western culture. I do not know an equivalent for Chinamen. Pissing in someone's breakfast zhou might be a close equivalent. My best friend terminated her engagement that way. (The glove I mean. He eats muffins for breakfast.)

I define internal martial art as unusual muscle recruitment and leave it at that. If my definition is incomplete, at least it is correct so far as it goes.

Maybe slapping someone with the bottom of your shoes is the equivalent culturally loaded act in Eastern culture

Wow - that requires quite a lot of speed, to go through two gates first!

Do you stand quite close to each other at the beginning - or do you have to take some steps to "attack" (touch) as well?

Thanks :D

JW ordered : start out of the kicking range...
so
this is like fencing speed try.
I can connect it with "advanced" version /you need advanced in the art partners to do it/ ,
3-4 partners in the corners of the mat.
You`re in the meddle.
Task - do the big throws as fast as you are able to.

You and your partner are close enough that footwork is not needed.

This clip is quite close to what I was talking about in my 1st post. The only difference is your both hands will go through both sides of your opponent's head. You move in like Chinese zombie.

Can you use your

- front hand to catch your opponent's "jab",
- back hand to catch his "cross"?
- hay-maker to knock down both of his jab and cross?
