Single Palm Change applications

Discussion on the three big Chinese internals, Yiquan, Bajiquan, Piguazhang and other similar styles.

Single Palm Change applications

Postby I-mon on Wed Jun 03, 2015 7:14 pm

I've jumped back into my bagua and xingyi practice after taking a break for the last few years to focus on basic exercises - the basics before the basics, if you like - and simple parkour/natural movement stuff, wrestling and BJJ.

Anyway I'm loving it, things are going well, and I wanted to ask people here if they have any good links to videos or descriptions of how the different components of bagua single palm change body mechanics are applied in basic combinations of throws and set-ups.

For videos, I'd be extremely happy to see examples from other arts (wrestling, judo, sumo, boxing, silat or anything else) which may illustrate aspects of the single palm change. I'm especially interested in applying the same mechanics to striking distance with set-ups involving the arms and hands, bridging distance once contact has been made involving close-range strikes and sweeps and so on, and (my favourite) clinch or body-to-body throwing distance.

Any ideas?

I-mon:

IIRC, you trained under Luo De-xiu....?

I can't think of many more people on earth who are better qualified to teach applications of basic Bagua.

Andy I trained with Luo four to six days a week for two years :D

I'm not asking anyone to teach me bagua, I'm asking anyone who has thought about it to share links to videos of good throws strikes and setups which show particular components of the body methods present in the single palm change.

We could just put up throwing vids and watch the hips and torsos of the performer:

I enjoy looking at the various different interpretations of "single palm change" from the different bagua schools. Since my background is Liang (more striking), Cheng examples of using it to throw are quite interesting (for me).

Zhang Jie's first book (in English) had a lot of photos of applications for the above.

In that case, I'd suggest anything that Tim Cartmell has on standing grappling is what you are looking for.

Tim seems to have taken a similar evolution to you - learned IMA, then put in through a very different sausage grinder (in his case, BJJ/MMA) to see what came out the other end.

Though I assume you are already very familiar with Tim's material, particularly as he was also a Luo student?

Also some time ago, someone posted a GIF of a UFC bout in which one of the fighters - I think it was Machida - pulled off a near perfect SPH app, as a foot sweep.

Su shows a lot of good stuff, but I am not sure what his methodology is: I didn't follow what he was trying to get. Your very own Mr Luo, OTOH, seems to show a much clearer teaching method: Here you can see what he is doing and what he is building on - in this case, the hand methods, body angle and footwork, of per se SPH. Very clear usage.
