Its probably not the planks that were the problem, it was probably some of the other crap they were doing like crunches which tighten you right up.

Steve, would you mind sharing a video of what you are describing? I'm having a hard time visualizing it. I do agree that having a strong and flexible core very important, and I'm also not sure that a traditional plank (which has always felt quite static to me) is the best way to accomplish this. I prefer the RKC Plank, which is more dynamic. While I have no problem holding a plank for a minute or longer, a properly executed RKC plank will have you quivering after 20 seconds or so.

FWIW, last weekend I did three circuits of this "Muay Thai Bodyweight Workout" before drilling and got a really good core workout from it.
