What do you intend to discuss in this thread?

Cheng Man Ching is a historical figure. His time in New York may be of interest to the general membership.

An FYI may simply be the only purpose in posting a clip - the implication might be as simple as, "I found this interesting and I hope others might find it interesting too' or the intention might also be, "So what do you think?"

Others can decide what issues, if any, the post raises and what points they might want to discuss - that is what is nice about a forum - leaves lots of room for comments, interpretation and discussion among a wide array of participants with multiple viewpoints to choose from.

To be honest I find it strange that someone would make a documentary about CMC's teaching in America without talking to William C C Chen or the close students of Robert Smith and TT Liang.

Personally I am much more interested in CMC's time and teaching in Taiwan and Malaysia, as he seems to have taught a much more martial curriculum there, hopefully someone will make a documentary covering his time there sometime in the near future!

there's also Robert Ante. I believe he was trained directly from Robert Smith.
I had a instructor friend from there who came over my house to push quite often.

No doco but there's a short, favourably reviewed book by Nigel Sutton on just that topic - "Wisdom of Taiji Masters":

Just stumbled on it reading the OPs link - looks like chinesemartialstudies.com is full of well-written, thoughtful & mostly interesting articles.

Re that one in particular I had no idea CMC/ZMQ spent time in SE Asia & was Huang Xingxian's teacher*.

Either I missed the SE Asian branch in the lineage chart, or it's completely omitted - despite Wikipedia having an article on Huang Xingxian... It's a shame to overlook the Straits Chinese/Chinese diaspora; I get the impression some Chinese traditions might be best preserved in those communities.

Wow. Yang Luchan as a teacher is quite the upgrade from Yang Chengfu.

The time travel involved is quite impressive.

I think even among CMC's students there's a lot of varying degrees of connection and skill. I've met a few and they didn't seem to have any more insight into CMC than later people like CC Chen. Being an NYC guy and having met a lot of the players, I can't really see what new material could have been covered for people connected to that community. Maybe the European students would get something out of it, but who knows.
