Thanks Rick, I studied CMC taiji in Philly for about 5 years with several of his students and students of theirs, so I might just buy a copy.

I originally learned the CMC form from one of his students who happens to appear in the video, Carol Yamasaki.

The socio-cultural background is an excellent indicator of normative MA history of the day but we see that Zheng Manqing was a bridge from the past who excellent within the milieu of present (then) changes while re-enginneering future tai chi concepts to fit his view and orientation. This is not necessarily bad but lest we forget, taijiquan was still new to the masses and the changes from martial to leisure or hobby status surely affected its presence today.

p.s. Stuff like this I share with my small group of enthiusiasts for a historical view of CMA with appropriate reference as a way for research and accountability. I am afraid of this qi hugging mentality so I try harder to present 'factual and researchable context.

I'd like to hear some more about the difference of what Taiwan and Malaysia people were doing in comparison to the hippies.

There were some who were martial artists hard men like Alan Ginsberg
If you look at the bulk of his u s students they were hippies
Those who wernt Stan Israel ,Herman Kraus and the like were already proficient martial artists and I am sure they didn't come to Chen for his martial ability
Just look at the pushing and the impractical sword stuff they are doing
Don't tell me that stuff would have worked against a half decent fencer
In Taiwan they were preparing for the Chinese invasion and all going thru national service
It was the communist uprising in Malaysia and Chinese were lucky if they made it to training and back so practical application was a necessity
Even when my teacher was training there in the early 70's Malay practitioners of Silat and muAy Thai should drop by to test out the tai chi people
I may be wrong but that's how I see it

O.K. So your saying that it was special military purpose?
Robert Ant'e was one of the main guys in CMC lineage. He is very old but still alive.
I have a buddy who's been training with him for a very long time, he comes over my house to push often.

But I have trained with several of ZMQ's Taiwan indoors, and they all had gongfu, in one way or another, some even did the long pole stuff!They had much more to offer than some of his western desciples (and their adepts)!
