Absorb and Repel

Postby Yeung on Tue Dec 06, 2016 11:09 am

I am developing various tests to demonstrate some of the concepts in Internal Martial Arts, and here is one of them:

The subject is a practitioner of Taijiquan and not learned in Wing Chun at all, and he can still absorb the incoming force and repel with a turn. Any comment is welcome to improve this type of tests and demonstrations.

Not really sure what you're looking for. Everyone should try rooting, peng, lu, etc. with a partner that is applying some simple test. A couple that we've tried:

- have your partner push on your shoulders. you place your hands under his elbows. the harder he pushes the more you "borrow" that push to push on his elbows. after a short time, it feels like he pushes himself. no deep "internal" development.
- have your partner push your left arm with his right. you "borrow" this push in a similar circular way and push his left arm with your right. it feels like he pushes himself. this one feels more "internal".

These feel like parlor tricks but are nevertheless interesting.

Interesting in relating rooting, pend, lu, etc., maybe it is easier by saying how to root in a two character Wing Chun stance. If you refer to pend and lu would be difficult would be difficult as the subject just push forward his arm without rotating inward or outward. It is possible to use the peng technique similar to a bong in Wing Chun together with the turn but I think it is better to demonstrate one variable at a time.
