I think I saw here or maybe it was another board a little while back a post about the characters used for this term are actually pointing to the opening of a jar's lid vertically and then setting it back down again. Could someone provide me a link to that thread or know where I might have seen it?

Taijiquan and other CMA lacks an anatomical base of reference when referring to such concepts but generically speaking Sun style taijiquan has the term open/close taijiquan based on an objective vista of open and closing hands with posture(s) but within open/close exists stick/compression (within push)/adhere/push/grab/trap!/based on degree of open/close of specific posture.

Sun style aka Kai/He taijiquan in some circles
open (Kai Shou) 开手
close (He Shou) 合手
