Testing And Proofing Your CMA...

...in open competition. Who's done it? Would be nice to know where everyone is coming from.

-MMA?

-BJJ/Freestyle Submission Wrestling?

-Sanda?

-Boxing or Kickboxing?

-Other?

- Karate tournament,
- Golden Glove boxing,
- wrestling,
- Sanda.

There was no MMA back in my time.

only judo comp. I wouldn't call that testing of CMA, just testing of whatever I know, but CMA is a part.

respect to you guys for doing more.

Real life
Lots of inter Kwoon in the 70's when it wasn't so nice
Local tournaments
World tang shou Tao 1975
Shorini kempo fighting in Japan
Accepting challenges from lots of karate people who came to our school in the 70's thinking Kung fu was bullshit
This included the Australian head of a major karate system and his teacher from Germany
He was going back to Germany to fight the best known wing Chun guy in Germany and wanted to fight a Kung fu guy first
My teacher told me I wasn't to hurt either of them
No one told them that
The hardest fights I had were within my own school
I never valued competition much and still don't
If you train right it is there when you need it

I did a handful of Karate tournaments. I train under a retired professional kickboxer, but I couldn't get medical clearance to do full contact. Regularly spar with guys training for full contact. Like Wayne said, hard training in the school. Edit: been training at my current school since 2006.

PHs comps in TW, late 80s, early 90s
sparring in my schools
unwanted challenges in China (staff, 3 stitches over left eye)/Taiwans parks (the last 6 yrs ago, against a feeding crane, I ended up with a fractured ulna)

I'm basically a boxercise guy, so no testing here, but one time for about 17 years ago i joined in on one training session at the lokal Glima wrestling club. Tough but friendly guys, i fared well, but damn it how my arms and fingers ached for about a week after that session. My wife often tell me i''m as made of Tofu, hmmmmm. The layout of their training is quite simple as i remember, simple warmup then king of the hill kind of sparring.

Feels like a d!CK measuring contest... 1st, people can lie, to which I'm not goin to bother fact checking. If friggin Trump lovers who feel the hardest part of the election was just getting him elected...(won't or) don't care what the orange baboon is doing then I won't either.

Anyway here's mine, with CMA research:

-Filipino "tong Khan Kalan"
-Judo:
-Karate tournaments
-Wrestling:
*Team state champions, team co Captain, 3rd in state... easily did over 300+ matches in career, ie meets, tournaments, regionals & states.
-Kung Fu tournaments
-Shaolin: week long San da class with sparring. Scored highest in my group
-San da /shou 2x champion at 85kg USA
-UFC and Russian absolute 2: 3 pro fights
-Hung kyun and Taijiquan still ongoing...

Early days i did regional level judo and a couple of kickboxing comps.

7 years of door security.

Many national and international level sub grappling and bjj events now, with many medals and consistantly on the podium in british no gi.

I continue to teach and spar with mma and bjj guys on a weekly basis where i tend to do most of my body method testing.

Cheers

Tournaments: kickboxing (ring & tma versions with takedowns), freestyle wrestling, amateur mma, no gi submission, pankration, sambo, foam swords, koshiki, continuous. Still compete. Will try greco, sumo (why not) & a gi one like sj, bjj or judo if it presents itself. The best part of tournaments are testing things out and meeting people. I get invited to visit and also know which places i would not step into if they are prats or tofu.

The real question - which ones is the best for cma? IMO

1. mma/pankration because of the grip & freedom to mix
2. Sanshou to warm up to open rules
3. Weapons provides a lot of chances to test interesting skills out.
