New Instructional Video - How to Use the Art in Sparring

The new video is at the bottom. I shot it last week with my student and it shows how to use the 12 Core Postures of the art in a sparring format, with boxing gloves. My student has only been studying with me for a month, but I told him he could hit me any way he liked and I would try to use each of them one by one until we got a clear shot. For one or two shots I was a little absent-minded, thinking about what I was trying to show, but overall it turned out very well. I hope that you guys enjoy it!

I hope to visit my master in Guilin next month and shoot some proper sparring videos, but we'll see. I'll be going there primarily to learn sword-fighting, so that is my priority. It may be the last chance I get to learn from him before I leave China, so time is limited..

Enjoyed that! Each technique does look very different from the others and from kickboxing. I wonder how they work if the partner with shorter reach does them. Looks like they mostly have in common removing the opponent's guard hands and very fast movement in doing so?

P.S. Love the alleyway and nature scenery, and the changes to the sepia b/w color and slow motion. Nice cinematography!

Had to take it down. Made a typo... "£$"£%&^$%!@!!!

Glad you liked it, though.. :)

As for reach, my master never had a problem kicking my arse with these very techniques and he's MUCH shorter than me! You are right about plowing through their guard.

Video unavailable - but don't worry - using art in sparring is easy - hit them with a paint brush!

Ah ha, I see you are new to using art in sparring, as it's "stab" them with a paint brush. I should know, I've practiced the secret brush slow AND fast form, plus the 24 brush nei gong for the past 20 years.

Sadly I'm just a beginner in "art sparring". I don't even know how to hold the paintbrush properly, and I get ink everywhere.

The struggle is real.

Worry not young grasshopper, "art sparring" skill will come in time. If you are getting ink everywhere it just means that you need to spend at least 10 more years on your slow form. How else would one expect to gain mastery of the intricate combat methods of the brush if one can't even hone the body mechanics of waving it in the air.

Struggle on my friend. The payoff is worth the investment of time and effort. All you need is blind faith.

Excellent production, thought the entrance and exits with the motorbike were very cool although a little long.

The material covered was very interesting, I am wondering about the footwork used for each of the techniques demonstrated is it different or is it a basic footwork. Not much in the clip was mentioned about this.

Great! Ja, I ran out of the best motorbike material.. I plan to shoot some new material in about a month, but more about nature.

There is a particular step used for each. There are about four in the 12 Core Postures. There is straight, straight with a big step, zig-zag and a sideways cross-step. It's not written in stone that you have to use those, though.. :P

I think I could actually watch a 5 minute video of just motorbiking through interesting alleys and streets. Kind of a movie of more cultural artifacts that will be lost soon. Like when you see footage of Cuba with all the 50s USA cars.

For the technical MA part, I gravitated to the cloud hands part (doing that in taijiquan form) and kind of the up down hands swimming/waving (sorry forgot the name already) part -- we used to do that as kids when kind of "inventing" our own sparring moves. Maybe the original source was the same source but there is no way we would have known.

I like the guard removal theme in recent threads.
