self-defense, sport, art, neigong

Discussion on the three big Chinese internals, Yiquan, Bajiquan, Piguazhang and other similar styles.

self-defense, sport, art, neigong

are you doing / have you done / do you still do

- self-defense type of training (more emergency type of stuff), unarmed, armed, etc. more scenario-based than fully resistant type of stuff.
- self-defense, e.g., cpr, first aid, water safety, escaping from fire, advanced defensive driving, wilderness survival, etc. also more scenario-based.
- combat sports
- the "art" in martial art, whatever that means.
- neigong, qigong, meditation, "inner" cultivation, alternative/complementary medicine or health.

especially if you do / did all.

I get the feeling most people do the 1st or 3rd.

I find self defence training a bit dull and boring. I only do it because I have to - ha ha ;)

My personal focus in martial arts is 3, 4 and 5.

I think I forgot why I keep it up. Through the years, Tai chi has become a part of me, who I am. So I would lose a bit of my identity if I gave it up. But I think that I practice it mostly as an art of body movement and an art of awareness, and as a path to self-discovery.
...Maybe also like nei gong. And I like partner work, not because of practicing self-defense or combat methods. Mostly just because it's fun.
...or at least something like that ... Maybe... :P

2,3,4 and 5.

Wilderness skills, wrestling/BJJ, the "arts" of capoeira Angola and Chinese IMA - which I continue for their own sakes not just because they give me many benefits in my life and other physical endeavours, but because I've been doing them for long enough that I'd might as well put in the effort to actually get competent at them! And yeah meditation, pranayama, qigong, neigong, many forms of exercise rehab and physical therapy, because again I'm slowly but surely starting to get somewhere on the foundation I've built over the last 20+ years.

lol call me a hippie but I mostly do #5 now. have done all a tiny bit. I do ask because I'm surprised an IMA board sometimes doesn't seem more interested in the intersection of these (maybe except #2), which seems where IMA is at (or theoretically should be). With all the sparring, boxing, and mma talk lately, though, I would really like to learn a bit of striking sparring. it's kinda down on the priority list after some other sports but seems so darn fun.

I have done 3, but since a few years my main focus is 4/5, especially 5. Trying to apply my education and maybe convince people about the value for the art for health and fitness without referring to esoteric theories.

Doing a certain amount of self-defense training (of all different types) seems like a good idea.
