Re-upload of my Master's Yang shi Taijiquan Form..

Postby MaartenSFS on Mon Jun 26, 2017 2:44 pm

I know that I uploaded this before several years ago.. I know I did! But it disappeared, so here it goes again:

The form contains elements of a lot of the styles that he learned over the years.

So after all these years of training what do you think of this form now
And what do others think
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

I still like it a lot. May learn it from him when I go back in just over a month. It flows really nicely. We'll see, though. I am making a list of things that I want to learn, you know besides sparring..

Nice form why does he still refer to it as yang style taiji

why not just call it taiji or make up his own name for it.
Asked out of curiosity.

It's not even something close to Yang Tai Chi. But it's still a nice performance and he seems to be good at whatever he is doing.

Hello! Originally I wanted to have a "cool post count" of 108, or something like that (something associated with Tai Chi) but that does not seem possible here. Therefore I am editing this post to point out that users here cannot delete their own posts. I do not understand why users have the ability to edit their posts but not to delete their posts.

I ask because it leads to comments like this
By naming it, it will be judged by the standards of "yang's" taiji which will prompt comments.

I call what I found “no name taiji” rather then name it, feeling by doing so it would tend to confine the freedom to a set of expectations apart from the experience. One does not play taiji, one becomes what others view and feel as taiji.
For the one playing there really is no name, it is.

Your teacher has a unique flavor, and expresses it well.

He's obviously very good but it's not tai chi. I see elements of xingyi and liuhebafa in there. Probably some good/interesting stuff. If he was around here I would probably ask him for some lessons.

others might feel different, including those who's work you might cite to prove your point.

Before yang, chen or wu style was labeled as taiji what was it called?
why was it called taiji?

off topic: my point was that the his teacher looked skilled and seemed to have put together something
that is notable for itself...

if you want to come visit me I will break it down for you and explain everything in person. It's all there in the long form, step by step, section by section. Deviation from this structure breaks the pattern and the art is no longer tai chi. All you have to do is read the taiji classics and you will see it right away -- or do you think I am splitting too many hairs over this?

In the words of my teacher "I'm not a taiji theorist, I am a taiji practitioner" I practice a lot and have done so for awhile.
All that I have met who've felt my practice seem to feel my practice accords with what they have read of taiji.
I've answered my own questions maybe you need someone to help you answer yours.

pushing hands is not taiji
Others may feel different.

at any rate much of this is off topic
not really something for here.

My Master is no push-over when it comes to Tuishou (pun intended), but being good at Tuishou is not what makes someone good at Taiji - it's FIGHTING, you know, the thing that it was designed for in the first place?? And he's good at that. I'll admit that it's not 100% Taiji, but the Taiji is in there, whether you can see it or not. If you can't and really believe that Tuishou is the pinacle of Taiji skill, I would ask you to take a good, hard look at what you are doing and go spar with a lot of people. If you get totally owned, a change of course may be required. If you do well, at least you will know it and be content with yourself. Still doesn't negate what others are doing, especially when it works REALLY well for them in COMBAT.
