Hmm ok thanks, similar but different. More concrete and clear applications rather than abstract! But similar kind of squeezing in, I think.

We seem to have a lot of agreement, which is rare. :)

3. Death Star - lol, but enjoyed that article

I do agree with the article that it's horizontal force straight out from the body. Imagine that your pengjin gives you a sphere of round force, and straight out of this comes a force, from the middle of this sphere. The Death Star is a funny picture, but as a picture it's quite an appropriate one.

Some teachers says that the most common use of ji is just a straight punch. "Fist under elbow", "parry and punch" and all beng types of fist should be good examples of using ji jin to strike with. A horizontally aligned back fist would do as well.

Both JW's explanation and this have to do with straight horizontal forces, so maybe they are related somehow or share a common history?

Kinda like what Wayne Hansen said/wrote.

As double peng, you can make progressive contact with the lead forearm/hand/elbow until you get some resistance, and then bolster or otherwise support the contact with a follow-up from the rear hand as you penetrate with rotation. Bu-bump - like that.

The death star visual works for me.

The wrestling ji makes sense for me in the press in, crowd in, squeeze in sense. It's what you were saying about "filling in" the space. That is getting away from the death star visual, which is kind of why I was asking about this vocabulary. Regular every day language easily can apply to both uses, but if ji is much more narrow and specific in TJQ vocabulary, maybe not. The fact that JW brings it up from shuaijiao, though, makes me suspect there is CMA overlap here. For me the ambiguity and "abstraction" is not a problem and the common word makes sense. Hate to lose the agreement, but methinks not everyone would agree with this.

Think of it like a boxers jab to set up a power shot
Or hsing I uniting fist changing in an instant to metal
It is triangleation but that can be a crude use of a subtle energy
The first thing I learnt to apply abrupt energy with was press
I did it on everyone ,old lady's in the street ,little children
One day I showed it to a mate of mine the grandson of victor Trumper the cricket immortal
Grant was a great sportsman ,champion swimmer, soccer representative and good street fighter
Grant said can I have a go at that
No technique just raw power which threw me back 10 feet
So look for refinement
The poem on press in the tai chi classics tells you all you need to know
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Bu-bump - like that.

There's even a "tcc Song of Ji." It's very "practical," too.

The Song of Chi

What is the meaning of Chi energy?

There are two aspects to its functional use:
The direct way is to go to meet the opponent
and attach gently in one movement.
The indirect way is to use the reaction force
like the rebound of a ball bouncing off a wall, or
a coin thrown on a drumhead,
bouncing off with a ringing sound.

See, now "ba bump" works for me. "Bu bump," not so much. Just fkin kidding, mfs.

Method #1 in the song was demonstrated (allegedly) in Ang Lee's "Pushing Hands." Start at 28 seconds in.

Love that movie.

Like the ba-bump explanation, too.

meh. away from the body, that's it.

*shakes head*

what can I say, you've heard me and Chris mention triangulation for years I reckon.
without the neigong, it's probaly hard to find or appreciate properly.

I'm sure you're lucky in other ways ;)

Actually no - first time I've heard anybody say "triangulation" in relation to Ji, although I've talked to Chris about triangles a lot :)

I don't do Death Star Tai Chi - sorry.

And you missed the main point - it's not "away from the body" - it's "JIN away from the body". Don't worry - everybody misses that point.

It all "jin" though so it's kind of stating the obvious no?

I'll have to re read the that part of the thread as I didn't get the Death Star reference, but I'm sure it's all good lol..

ah got it now read the link.
he did ok there old bao :D

though you know it's not just with two hands. it can be one hand striking. it can be an elbow.

the support can be almost anywhere. As long as you have 2 lines of intent in the body (triangulating toward eachother) and it's in the right sort of shape to support it.
the classical yang posture is just like a pro to type example kind of thing.
You can also use the intent to press the opponent as a tactic, beyond yourself - like others have brought up.

ji has quite a lot going for it I would say.
