Taiji may be getting some publicity. It looks like Jack Ma, as in Alibaba, wants to popularize it.

The adoption of TCC will put it firmly in the camp of performance art, . Since most TCC is practiced for health and/or performance it will probably diminish the ranks of traditional TCC where the accent is on MA.

Isn't that article some 5yrs old? Taijiquan will most probably never be an Olympic sport no matter if billionares are in support of it, TJQ is not a very interesting spectator sport. I actually think that the think now is that there are too many martial arts in the Olympics, my personal belief is that MMA in some variation will eventually replace most if not all( except fencing).

I think Tai Chi is better off being an underground art. I just don't really feel like Tai Chi was ever made for mass production.

Bit late for it to be underground

I don't think so Wayne. Most of what I'm seeing isn't really Tai Chi anyways. It takes a very long time and most of the people in the Olympics are very young. So what kind of Tai Chi would they really have?

TKD Chi, I suppose :)

BDW
I sow children MMA in the cage fights /in Galileo TV series/.
There was 10 y.o. girl fighting with 11 y,o. boy... /there is not to much little girls interested in such >sport<,
so she fights mostly with boys , as they say/
Kinda of frightening thing ,if you ask me,
particularly, what is in their parents heads?
anyway, it is the sign, that something like MMA will be in the Olympics games, not the TJ .
Yes,
not precision in the move, but punching in the face is preference today crowd.

sorry for side kicking the thread,
children MMA needs separate post,
or not?
~`cause today child will grow...

Ma and Li earns money on Tai Chi. They couldn't be less concerned if Tai chi was completely turned into a performance dance and if every trace of martial art disappeared. If they brought it to the Olympics, they would become famous globally in the whole Olympic world and they could earn much more money through the fame. So obviously it's for selfish reasons like anything else they do.

Bao, there is nothing wrong with earning money. People are suppose to provide a stable income for your family.

My old MMA/BJJ instructors school had at least 80 students at 150.00 per month, plus other costs.
Do the math, that's a good living and that's a typical MMA school.

Jet li and Jack Ma are already globally famous!

I don't really think that's it for selfish reasons. What I would be concerned about is the time/skill factor and
even more damage being done to a basically forgotten art.

I don't think money is a concern for Ma and Li, Ma is a multi billionaire. It is more to do with the prestige it carries for China and they probably are hand in glove with the government. An example of the adoption of a fighting art was TKD which frankly looks awful in an Olympic setting, boxing seems to have weathered the storms and maintained a certain integrity
