In this clip, when he pulls his Pi back, his leading foot stays on the ground. If I do this way, I will feel that my upper body and lower body are not coordinated as one. It gives me very uncomfortable feeling. I don't feel "float - swim in the air". To be able to pull your leading leg back fast is a very important MA skill.

I pull back my Pi, my leading leg is pulling back and off the ground. I then step in after that.

Makes me think of some of the Pi variations in this video. How many ways do you Pi?
(Starts about 7 minutes in, thinking specifically about the 8:19 variation):

To pull your leading foot out of your opponent's front door and then step into his side door (or the other way around) can be seen in the following clip after 0.43.

Sometime I don't understand why XingYi doesn't have hammer fist and hook punch.

This is the Five Element Advance-Retreat set that we do, at the 24 second and 44 second mark you can see there is a technique like you describe above and it is taught to avoid a kick and then attack as the opponent recovers. The reason it's not done that way in Pi Quan alone is because you want the beginner to at least feel always the need to move forward.

Note: this is an "old" vid. ;D

Agree! The issue is how long should someone stay in that beginner training stage. In some system such as Baji, the beginner training and intermediate training are clear different.

This is the beginner level Baji form. For each and every punch, the feet are not moving during the punch (static punch). It's used as the elementary school text book.

This is the intermediate level Baji form. For each and every punch, the feet are sliding on the ground (dynamic punch). It's used as the high school text book.

Drawing the foot back , raising the foot , stepping off center , all footwork. This thread is about developing a quality working Pi chuan

To maintain the 3 harmonies. If you look at my other videos, the 3 harmonies are maintained (or at least should be :P ) in all the movements. That's not to say that it's wrong when people don't pull it back, it's just the way we do it.

I like this way of doing it with pulling the front foot back. I'm not a Xing Yi guy (just cross trained it a few years), but I think I'm going to start doing pi chuan in that fashion now

We do it with pull the front foot (not leg) back to move the center forward, back foot follows to solidify the forward movement, body drops to put body weight into the move and stabilize the whole movement. Co-ordination and timing mean everything. The engine is from the body center.

Basic baji training (as I learned it) from day 1 - up and down a 50 backyard field.
When Liu Yunqiao trained body guards - 400 moving punches or its variations - first part of the training session

Prior to learning any forms we generally learned most of the postures as linear moving postures and also added in the partner training for both parts and use of the shields:

also learned stationary training at the same time (.45 mark)

The Xing Yi Story (mythological tale with a lesson to be learned)

When we learned Xing Yi (originated from San Dang Qi Taiwan) we were told the story of a young student who was only taught beng quan. Everyday the student to and from the village did beng quan. When he returned to his teacher months later, he saw that other students had learned much more. So he asked the teacher for more - the teacher asked him to show what he had learned -the student executed the only thing he knew - beng quan - it was very powerful and none of the other students could stop it - the teacher turned to the other students and said, "He has trained well and is ready to learn more. Although all of you have more material than he does, none of you have achieved his level and you all should go back and start over with beng quan until you reach his level - this is the mark of true achievement in training."
