Probably occasionally bloating from consuming legumes, aren't Buddhists veggies?

I think at this point everyone recognizes that being obese is generally a bad idea.

Part of this with older iconography comes from the fact that being overweight historically was a sign of wealth and/or status within society.

That said, yes, doing a lot of breathing with a focus on the lower abdomen tends to result in a small, but noticeable, increase in your waist line. Anecdotally, this seems to be accentuated if you do a lot of seated meditation.

My suspicion is that it has to do with a change in the shape of the musculature of the lower abdomen that comes from consciously engaging breathing with the lower abdomen.

FYI, the fix for this is shih shui gung. It straightens the abdominal tissue in the lower abdomen that is stretched by lower belly breathing.

:) The statue with the martial pose isn't Buddha; it's his warrior attendant. But, it's certainly true that not all Buddha's have big bellies. And, more than likely, the historical Buddha didn't have one either. Sitting under a tree for a long time might end up with starvation bloating, though the bloat probably wouldn't extend to the breasts. Just sayin'

My original point was about the relation of qi to belly size, not what the belly was flab or muscle. Size is size, and it has an effect. However, is size or qi more important? I.e., can some people use size and explain it as using something else?

The difference between a chi belly and fat belly is that the belly in the expanded breath capacity can be contracted in a reverse breath. A layer of fat was probably an advantage in prehistoric times when food was not readily available. Fat shaming apart a large fat belly has been shown to be unhealthy. This has many causes, the 3 meals a day, fat/carb fast food culture being a main culprit. This can be changed by observing a strict diet and as JW says exercises can help strengthen the abdominals and hold in the stomach
