I was a taijiquan teacher/instructor for 20 or so years when I applied for a tai chi position (part time) at a local park district. They wre looking for some type of Tai Chi certification as part of the employment vetting process and I ended up finding Dr Paul Lam, who had a certification schema and it was a necessary benefit to ensure a "safe and legislated" for private/public marketplace institutions looking for "vetted" people.
I may not agree with the type and certification that is asked for but at best, it is a tool and base for possessing a knowledge background grounded in a fitness environment. It is a response to the quasi mystical com[ponent that many bring to tai chi that muddies the waters so on that level, the trend is positive.
UPDATE: The Arthritis Foundation has picked up on the Dr Paul Lam initiative for people with Arthritis and expanded to the low impact, low velocty component as a step for decreasing chronic illness without aggravating sympioms of "chronic" disease.
