Oh thanks. From what I hear Wang Ju-Rong was a bagua specialist. But we don't really do any bagua per-se. From what I hear I get the feeling I should drop everything I do (including Chen style) and go to Bagua. I like some of the bagua stuff I see.. but, to find good instruction at my age is probably impossible.

As for being too old to start over I'd start over anyways just to keep beginner's mind.

I've lost all context of this thread, but agree with you

1. probably too old to "start over" ( no idea of your age, just guessing from your kids' approximate ages )
2. beginner's mind always good
3. "adding" baguazhang to anything is probably great
4. finding a good instructor in it .... likely nearly impossible

if I could do it all over again, bgz seems amazing from a distance.

I can’t vouch for any other lineages of Yin style Bagua except my own. YSB International. Yearly seminars in Beijing, and yearly seminars in the US and UK. Probably 200 some people practicing around the globe. Most of the guys are old now. The stuff He Jinbao is showing now is mind blowing. The straight sword form is insane. The Snake system is brutal. Basically I waited 20 years just to see it, and I’m glad I didn’t get to see it when I was younger because I might have gotten into some trouble.
Ideally a person doesn’t have any martial experience to start learning YSB. But Chen style taiji is the best experience to have as it’s built the proper foundation. You literally won’t have to change habits or rebuild strengths. Just be more hardcore. Actually Chen would be better than nothing, if you’re not young anymore.

One last funny story not about Li Shuwen but about Liu Yunqiao. Again accuracy and validity always open to question so buyer beware LOL Not sure if wheel exists or who has it.

GM Liu had a wheel like chart and when you turn the various dials you could align the season with the time and the point (qi acupoint) that you could strike to cause damage (striking the snake head) His younger students were begging him to teach them the points, time and season. He refused for a very long time and finally relented and agreed to teach them one point if they promised never ever to use it. The students agreed. After he taught them the students kind of really wanted to know if this striking really works but they didn't know how exactly it could be tested since they promised GM Liu they would never use it. Finally one of them got the idea to try it on a dog - they chased the dog down, began striking it, and much to their amazement the dog whined a bit but gingerly trotted away; no damage apparent. They were all a bit distraught and really let down and began to question GM Liu's knowledge. Finally they got brave enough and approached and said, "Your dian xue doesn't work!" GM Liu responded, " and you know this how?" "Did you forget what you promised?" The students stammered a bit and fessed up to trying it on a dog. GM Liu laughed and responded, "I knew you would try something like this and I did not teach you a valid striking point knowing full well you would do this. You are far to young to handle the responsibilities of holding such knowledge."
