Starting Strength training & Heavy Bag

Discussion on the three big Chinese internals, Yiquan, Bajiquan, Piguazhang and other similar styles.

When I work the heavy bag I like to work my jab cross combo a lot. Then I will work a jab cross roundhouse. Then I usually add some hooks and palm strikes.

I also like to just work power and technique with one move. So I will take say a single punch and work it really making sure I get good solid contact the whole time.

For cardio I like to spend a minute or two just going balls to the wall while moving a lot.

Just out of interest Darth, why do you say "don't slap sideways at the bag". Is this advice just for a heavy bag? or do you think this applies to all bag training. I ask because I really "got my chops in" practicing all manner of palm strikes on semi-heavy bags, with no ill effects. This was a long time ago and I was much stronger physically, but I think if you work up to a meaty slap it shouldn't do any harm. Thinking about it though, the bag should be soften up a bit before going full bore.

I'd like to know your views on this.

slapping in context to boxing is not palm strikes friend, it is merely poor form. :)

First, it will be obvious that you do not know what you are doing (and you will be lucky if anyone corrects you). Second, as noted above, there is a real issue of sprain and compression injury to your wrist, radial head joint, and shoulder. Like anything else in boxing, training is paramount.

Thanks Dr Fish I will take your advice. I think my technique is ok but I am sure there is a boxing gym around.

Many thanks all.

THIS is the best advice so far.

i typically stay away from these topics anymore because the good advice gets drowned out.

everyone so far has missed the first and most important response.

what's your goal?

that will determine the majority of the needs of a program.

Hey Ashe,

Dr Fish posted his comment and I just can't ignore that but I'm not sure people missed anything - not arguing just found the thread gave me lots of food for thought. I think there was lots of good positive advice and various opinions and they actually responded to the question I asked 8-) and when I start using the bag I have some good options.

Cheers
