Guess it depends on which Judo you want to study. The more traditional Judo teachers are harder to find. The more competitive, sport judo schools are common. Judo has a lot going for it.

Article by Draeger on Judo kata:

If you're just looking for weapon training, the Goshin jutsu kata of Judo also deals with weapons.

When an art envolved from "combat" into "sport", many valuable skill will be lost. Judges, rules, illegal moves, tap out, ... may hurt MA big time.

data point from just one person - at my judo class we on occasion talk about strikes. never heard of weapons mentioned. at my bjj class, they more frequently (though still not often) will explain a distinction between a sport grappling move and a self defense or mma move albeit that is only in a ground context. never heard of weapons mentioned. these aren't rbsd type schools, though.

Traditional Judo has both Atemi Waza (striking techniques) and Goshinjutsu (self defense techniques). Many traditional sensei were often trained in traditional weapons (Jojutsu, Yawara, etc) as well. Not so easy to find traditional Judo these days.

my judo has no striking or weapons, and I have never come across any around me (even world renowned) that does, outside of books that is. Still, its in the system, but I think one should look elsewhere if trying to find no holds barred preparations. Not an influenced or well developed aspect of the art.

I have seen strike and weapons training done in kata (2 person pre-arranged form) in my school, but it is left at that and not practiced to any greater degree. One example is a knife trust defense using a standing arm bar. Also defense against a gun held close range. I've never seen anything practiced with resistance, but most Judo schools don't focus much on weapons or striking.

The nice things about the katas are that they still contain the "too deadly to spar with" techniques, and can be practiced by those who are willing to put in the time and effort.

As much as I love Judo, I would not go to it for weapons or striking training, just like I wouldn't go to Bagua or Mantis for ground fighting etc...

As i stated in another thread /about the forms/:
"katas" contemporary are train for ranks only and this is the reason that they don`t have meaning in real
but
they was designed by J.Kano to teach/show judo principle which are the same as in TCMA / without digiin` into Ki/qi staff/
so
they value depends from one approche

in vid. posted by John we can see red and white belt what is quite hig /over 5th degree "black" belt/
katas from kneeling position are echoes traditional ju jitsu
and are in "standard" for 4th degree

to answer directy thread q.:
judo don`t have a strike and weapon training
but
katas shows possibilitys and it up to you where you go with your judo when you got level where judo is really yours ;D

I just saw this thread so I called my Gramps, who was a student of Judo (not no more) since the late 50's. He said "Yes there are strikes, are you saying Judo people dont hit anymore" - lol
Also asked about weapons, he said yes, but he never learned any of them.

Hmm,
Methods,
I was the judo junke in `60/70s and in fact i menaged to get my ars on judo instructor level./"blessed" by Kodokan Judo Assoc./
and
NEVER heard such things
did you see judoka punching , kickin`or with weapon on tatami? /i don`t speak about "katas" or shows/
`cmon, judo was developed for sporty enviroment
all such staff was removed
so
if you train it as a part of the system - name of it it is - ju jitsu
period.

only possibility is, that you speak about C.B.C.J.S. ;)

Here in the US at least Judo seems to have been practiced as a serious martial art as well as a sport back in the 60s and 70s. Yes, the combat aspects were most often practiced in kata, but people also seem to have practiced outside the bounds of kata as well.

I think Judo is one of the most delivers-on-its-promises arts out there, but I'd no more look to Judo for information on bladed weapons combat than I would look to Tai Chi for my tactical pistol training, or Tae Kwon Do for my throws and takedowns material.

I dont know anything about Judo outside of what my Gramps and Dad have told me. I know they were serious and had a really good teacher that was known in the Bay Area. Believe me, my Gramps has nothing to gain by letting me know if their was striking or not in Judo.
