This is main reason that i quit judo -as a sport
on national team training level most of the training time is pure conditioning/strenght[Li] exercises winded up for unbelvable level
all beauty of tactic and techniques are almost lost in" pumping iron" time :-\

Yeah, I was actually watching how the Hungarians train and it seems that they do more kettlebells work than anything else. Kettlebells are cool I pick them up everyday but if I were surrounded by all those judoka I'd much rather be training on the mat.

I hear the Japanese players don't lift weights as much as the Europeans.

agree I've seen some cool stuff by the young competitors but outside judo it would be really, really stupid stuff. judo randori is excellent tho

My experience is that those that spar over the top have some of these traits.

1: Don't understand mutual sparring concept
2: Don't have a day job
3: Don't have much martial arts skill
4: Don't listen to the teacher
5: Don't understand submission policy
6: Have not felt the wrath of the 'spike ring'

Its best just to stop altogether if it starts getting heated... its not really worth the trip to A&E - ER dept - It takes ages to get seen there in the U.K. and it sounds expensive in U.S.

Minimise the risk and enjoy your martial arts! Ive always found that a good 'beasting' prior to heavy sparring weeds out the risky emotions that can lead to ugly injuries.

If you want 'realism' then I guess its just easier to go down to the nearest travelers site/camp and start shouting racial abuse! You'll tend to find some real brawlers thereabouts. :)

no iron involved
;D

Yeah that's hardcore alright! You guys must have been monsters.

Now I think I know why the US doesn't do as well as the Europeans in Judo. In the US it's more of a hobby for most judoka and a lot of places only have classes twice a week.

Btw Wiesiek, how did you choose you're favorite throws and where's the best judo in Krakow?

Next time I'm in town I'd like to see a judo club. I know there was one by the Cracovia Stadium and it looked like it had a good space.

When I'm out there next I'm hoping to take a little sambo vacation and train a lot with the club there but it would be cool to see some Polish Judo as well. (Not sure if I'll step on the mat though "smash the American" just isn't that fun. ;) )

I didn`t choose my tokui waza
it choose me!

to be honest it was my teacher advise to work more with my specific kind of throws,
but
his advice come out from observations of my randoris
i was able to throw almost anone in the class before i started treat this throw as my tokui waza
and it was 3rd or 4th year of my judo adventure

..."more of a hobby for most judoka and a lot of places only have classes twice a week."
it was also my case in the 1st year of trainings
however
it was 4 time a week in second year and 6 and more in next one + summer and winter camps... :)

in Krakow / when i activly was the judoka/
was 4 "big" judo clubs /tatami all the time on the flor/ and couple of smaller ones where you have to assemble/dissa.
mat every time.
Right now i have no idea,
but i will do some "digging" in near future,/let me know erlier that you caming!/
i suppouse that "wisla" club/ police/ still hve god one,
MDK /Polisch YMCA, -orgin of my judo/ changed MA into k iokuschin ... :'(

anyway
you will get a lot of opportunity to randori for shure
everybody will be more than please to get "the piece" of yours
but
with respect and honour

Yeah hanging from a tree is tough.

It is interesting to hear how judo is trained differently in different parts of the world.

I should be in Poland a year from now. I let you know when I'm in town.
