Looking at Scott's clips, I would say he "highlights elements he likes for artistic/religious expression".

But the point stands: Many modern CMA peeps are unconsciously wasting some, much, or indeed, all of their time if combative functionality is what they are seeking.

Personally I do a lot of 'performance' training as I think martial forms are a positive male aesthetic, are an excellent exercise and because - above all - I enjoy it. But then, combat is not my core reason for training.
