Hai Yang interview q's

Postby mixjourneyman on Mon Jun 23, 2008 3:34 pm

We are putting together a video interview with my teacher Hai Yang and we want to get questions from ef people to answer about any of the arts he practices (hebei xingyi, chen taiji, cheng bagua).
Any kind of question is welcome, Mr.Yang is very open to any questions you want to ask, good or bad :)

dear mr yang, why don't you make mix cut his hair? ;D

but more seriously,
how important do you feel sparring is to learning xingyiquan, or any martial art?
what about competition sparring/sanshou/leitai?

Dear Mr. Yang:

Why do you put up with Mix's weird music tracks on his videos? ;)

Also, a discussion about the differences (characteristics, principles, material) with the various xingyi lineages (Zhang Zhaodong, Li Cunyi, Xue Dian) would be nice...

Dear Mr. Yang

If you could only tell a person one thing for them to practice to gain skill in martial arts, what would it be?

Could you tell us about any experiences you have had where you had to use your Arts in combat?

Do you think they increased your understanding of Martial Arts practice in general?

Cheers
Chris

Chris stole my question.... ;D.

But yeah, share some stories of fights or situations where xingyi was used. Also, it would be nice for him to speak a little about Xue Dian's xingyiquan (personal practice, usage in fighting, experience with Xue's xingyi as taught by other people, etc).

Thanks for the time, James.

Is it important to practice hitting heavy bags (or other similar objects) in xingyi training, or can attributes like power, proper wrist alignment, etc. be developed by only practicing forms and two-person drills (i.e. more traditional curriculum)? What are the pros and cons of using "hitting equipment"?

Ah, you do a "Tadzio", how nice. Hope you don't stop after 3 questions . . .

Hello Mr Yang, I have 3 questions. Thanks for taking time . . .

How do you gain confidence in your art for real self-defence/real fighting situations?

If you were aloud to choose only one method/technique from your arsenal to fight with, what would that be?

What part of your enemy's the body would be your favorite target for a real self-defence situation?

I'd be interested in his thoughts on the differences betwen the Shenfa/body method of his three styles. In particular about the use of the spine.

Also, what problems are there for training all three and what advantages are there for training all three?

Good stuff, Mix - always refreshing to have TCMAs teachers open for public discussion and Q&A.

Q. 1) If and/or when you practice sparring against full resisting partners, do you do the sparring in different formats? i.e. striking and throwing, only throwing, one person can only throw and the other can only strike etc...

Q. 2) Considering the large volume of throws in the Cheng system, do you do a lot of Shuai Jiao/Judo type sparring, or only applications training?

Q. 3 & 4) Do you do conditioning exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, weight/stone padlock/kettle bell training, running etc...? things that are not commonly practiced by the wider IMAs community - and what are your thoughts on these types conditioning practices relative to building functional martial skill within the context of practicing IMAs?

Thanks,
Craig

1. How is your physical practice (training of the body) related to the bagua theory?
2. Are the mother palms of your system related to internal organs and if yes, how?
3. What is the core of practice of sixiang in your bagua, how do you learn sixiang physically, by the body?
4. How do you go from bagua to sixiang and to liangyi in your physical practice?
5. What would you recommend to the Western students in order to physically understand the system of bagua?

Perhaps too difficult questions for an interview - but an article about this subject is welcomed too. Thanks.
