ba tang chuan

Postby bustr on Wed Apr 07, 2010 7:16 pm

Can anybody tell me about this? Any kind of info? I've been doing this for about six months but I never knew what it was called and don't know how the techniques are applied in combat. The exercises I do are slightly different than the 2 or 3 videos available online.

Thanks

Any ideas on how they are applied in combat? Number 8 is especially hard to fathom.

i am still not sure we are talking about the same set.
the ones i know are tang shou tao forms from hung i hsiang.
if they are the sets i know they are pretty straight forward.

We are. The set that I learned is a little different but still recognizable. Number 8 where you back up executing a reverse punch then parry with the punching hand while raising the leg on the opposite side and brushing it off with the opposite side hand is confusing to me. I'm having a hard time picturing any realistic application.

There is a Ba Tang Chuan 2-person set as well. Have you asked your instructor about the applications or the 2-person set?

yes it is the same set.
just think about retreating and parrying his hand to the side, lift the knee so he thinks he has to guard against a kick then step in delivering peng.
i would love to see the two man set, never seen this.
mike patterson has a video of the set with applications it is different to ours even though they both come from hsu hong chi.
you will get applications there.

Rather then rely on my own memory I looked at a video copy of a film shot in maybe 1970 at Hsu Hong-chi's school in Taiwan. It shows one of his instructors running through Ba Tang Chuan.
#8
1. Step back w left foot into right end horse. At same time reverse punch w/ left v. fist.
2. Lift right leg back to body, top of thigh horizontal in a leg block, body retreats a bit and turns a bit to left, counter clockwise block(big circle all the way down past right heel) w/ right palm. Left fist goes to left hip.
3. Step forward w/ right foot returning to where it began in right end horse, left v fist reverse punch.
repeat to other side.

I will not post the video publicly.
The only way to see it is to come by with some adult refreshments in hand. ;)

Let me know if you're ever in L.A. I'll show the complete vid to any TST'ers.

Wayne

I would if I could. I'll have to bring the disk into work and see if one of the guys here know how to capture a screen shot. You may hava to give me some time on this. Maybe I will include some shots from other forms. It also has Hsu Hong-chi performing Wu Shin Lien Wan and also shows his instructors doing a bunch of other old Taiwan tst forms plus some others that were new to me.
Hsu Hong-chi footage was filmed outside of my instructors school in Torrance circa 1977.

Wow. Awesome! I would LOVE to see that footage! But I understand not wanting to release it to the public. Are you gonna be visiting Oakland or the SF Bay area anytime soon? ;D
