This is the advantage to spar with someone outside of your style. When you spar with your MT partner, not only you can develop/test your elbow, knee, and kicking skill, you can also developed your leg catching skill at the same time. The extra skill that you develop may not help you to win by using the current rules, but it will help you big time in your life time combat skill development.

IMO, if you can

- pull down wrestler's leg shooting.
- wrap boxer's arm ASAP.
- catch MT guy's leg.

Even if you leg shooting skill may not be as good as wrestler, you punching skill may not be as good as boxer, and your kicking skill may not be as good as a MT guy, at least you can deal with their skills. What's left is whether or not they can deal with your skills (assume you have cross trained and they don't).

JW,

How did you pull down the wrestler?

By the shoulders, the neck, etc?

My own main concentration during this match was to use the "empty-body" training I'd received to evade my opponent's attacks when possible, to use my hands & forearms to absorb & neutralize the incoming force when I couldn't evade, and to be able to transition from "insubstantial" and mobile (while defending) to "substantial" and rooted in an instant while counterattacking.

On the elbow joints, upper arms, shoulders, back of the head, back of the neck, it all depends on the distance. If you use to do the weight pulley drills, your downward pulling will be very natural, fast, and powerful.

It's the 1st move of the Yang/Chang Taiji form (open position stance) if you add the leg movement into it. Why the Taiji founder did not add this leg movement? I have no idea.

Thanks JW.

I don't have anything mechanism like that but I have been hitting the tire with the sledge.

Finally found an old tractor tire down by the railroad tracks. I'll keep that wrestler's pull down in mind while I hit it.

I actually learned this movement as a defense against a throat grab. Break the hold with the upward double wrist movement, then grab & snap down/ break the opponent's collarbones. This requires no leg movement beyond the lowering of the weight with the downward snapping movement of the hands.

Hey Matt! So you're going to compete too? I thought you were just gonna be the trainer. Glad to hear you'll be stepping onto the Lei Tai & representing! :)
