Ling, Bling and Fling

Postby Scott P. Phillips on Fri Jul 23, 2010 8:23 pm

I have compiled an extended definition of ling 靈 for your enjoyment.

The subject came up in an earlier thread because the term is used to describe martial artists and their skills.

Is ling the same thing as lin?

1. No. Not the same.

2. Without a Chinese character "lin" could be damn near anything. I could come up with half a dozen options without even referring to a dictionary.

*head smack* . . . .I missed the joke.

Thanks, that was interesting and mind opening. Check out this capoeira clip. I think there are some parallels

Scott,
Nothing really profound or that I haven't read before. Several years ago on this forum, member: 'Kevin Wallbridge' had already went into greater depth on this subject and covered most of those points and meanings.

The real interest for me is only the relationship to the martial arts but there is a proverbial line that we don't cross on this forum. Bailewen, myself, and some others skirt the line on occasion but then delete posts as there are some things that don't come across correctly when written down. So in a sense 'Ling' is also a bit of a taboo subject on here. Not out of our league, just not willing to commit certain things to writing. You on the other hand are already living across that line yet your writings are still a bit lackluster and cryptic, on the ghost aspect for instance, assuming you do know about the hun and the po, but why do you still disguise the terms with your own interpretations? :-\

Glenn, po doesn't have the associations with power and prowess. You knew already but you weren't interested? Sounds like a....fib.

Here's a quote from Yang's book: "The root of Chinese qigong"; published 1989:

The Chinese believe that when your Shen reaches a higher and stronger state, you are able to sense and feel more sharply, and your mind is more clever and inspired. The world of living human beings is usually considered a Yang world, and the spiritual world after death is considered a Yin world. It is believed that when your Shen has reached this higher, sensitive state you can transcend your mind's normal capacity. Ideas beyond your usual grasp can be understood and controlled, and you may develop the ability to sense or even communicate with the Yin world. This supernatural Shen is called "Ling" (靈). "Ling" is commonly used by the Chinese to describe someone who is sharp, clever, nimble, and able to quickly empathize with people and things.

Flying Mud, yes brilliant video, thanks for posting. Mandinga--an exit with out end. Sounds like this line from the Daodejing:
The valley spirit is deathless,
it is called the dark mare,
the door of the dark mare is the root of heaven and earth;
So subtle it only seems to exist,
yet drawn upon it is inexhaustible.

Again, I don't understand your post?

I didn't write that.

Very academic. Wheres the personal experience so my hairs can stand on end?

It seems to have become somewhat fashionable now to write about ...these things.....even though we may never have crossed the line.
