rope dart

just started learning this. It is a very cool weapon, had never been interested, but Sifu likes "soft" weapons, gotta say loads of fun and great for footwork and shenfa.....anyone else play?

No, but my old teachers disciple from the Kuo Lien Ying line did and I got to watch him do it and play with his rope dart on a couple of occasions. Hard as hell, but pretty stunning to watch when it's done well.

I heard Kuo was really good with it, like had actually used it on bandits in mongolia back in the day whilst guarding gold trains.

Best,

I've had some basic training with the rope dart. My teacher hung a plastic jug from a tree and had me use it as a target. I got some serious rope burn from that 8-)

I love that weapon. Been at it for a few years now. The main reason I started was to improve my shenfa, the most important thing about this weapon is "feeling", that is the only way to really unite and control it, but that takes time for you to be able to identify it. You should get a liu xing chui (meteor hammer) and use that rather, the use is the same but the weight is much greater, so your skill improves much quicker as does your "feeling". Once you are used to a meteor hammer, your rope dart is as if on steroids..... But personally, I prefer the hammer, much more brutal....

I learned it from master Zhou while I was in China. It's fun (and not that difficult to learn as people say) and is more like a game than a weapon. I do not think one needs high skill or great gongfu to learn it (i've seen people with one year experience in martial arts learning it very easily).

I think I know around 24 moves

Trying to use a plastic coke bottle full of water on a length of string as a rope dart, I once completely tied myself up and then hit myself squarely in the nuts with it in my back yard. Fortunately, bound and nut hit, I had only to endure the mockery of my younger brother, and not the blows of some opportunist...
