Baguazhang in NM or El Paso TX?

Postby BaguaKicksAss on Mon Jul 11, 2011 4:57 pm

If anyone knows of any good teachers in the area please let me know as a friend of mine would like to look into Baguazhang. The only martial arts she knows are the courses she has taken for her security job (one of the security jobs where she gets into full on fights from time to time), but nothing else so far.

More specifically about the location: ""Las Cruces (New Mexico), El Paso (Texas), or Ruidoso (New Mexico) would be the closest. Unless they know of someone here in Alamogordo."

No modern Wushu forms though please, I wouldn't want to torture my friend like that ;).

There is a Tai Chi school in El Paso, but I don't know of any Bagua there.

The Tai Chi school in El Paso is: http://www.texastaichi.net/ (Disclaimer: I don't know anything about the teacher at that school, but he used to bring my former Chen style teacher in from San Antonio to teach seminars occasionally).

A quick google search for "el paso martial arts" turned up some other schools, which I know absolutely nothing about.

If your friend gets in full-on fights as part of her security job, then she needs to be very careful about what sorts of martial arts she pursues. Environmental awareness and being able to maintain central equilibrium become far more important than the style or lineage she trains. The practical hands-on experience of and clarity of instruction provided by the teacher are key.

This program, http://womenspersonaldefense.com/, is affiliated with the Hsin Lu Tao school, http://hsinlutao.com, which offers baguazhang training--but more importantly, offers training in basic fighting skills and kali/escrima weapons skills. Your friend would need to check with the instructors as to the provenance of their baguazhang.

Other than that, she will probably have to travel to either the Santa Fe area (He Jinbao has a small group training up there) or to San Antonio, Austin or Dallas periodically to get some basic training material. She will absolutely need training partners to learn how bagua--or any other martial art--works in fighting. Bagua is much more frequently taught as an art of performance and solo cultivation than as a practical art of self-defense.

If self-defense rather than silk-pyjama'ed self-cultivation is her goal, she may well be better off finding some playmates and working with a group like Pramek http://pramek.com.

Tim Cartmell, http://shenwu.com used to teach a group led by Abdullah Orozco at NM State@Las Cruces. Abdullah is at the University of Washington now, but Tim (shenwu@verizon.net) might be able to check with him about contacts in the area.
The training is bitter but the results are sweet. You pour out your muddiness in sweat and gain purity of spirit and qi.

Hi,
I noticed your post about a friend looking for Bagua Zhang near El Paso.
I'm going to be in El Paso tonight (11/14/2012) and am available for a lesson.

I studied with Tim Cartmell for about 8 years and know Sun Style Bagua well- will teach a bunch of applications/techniques/forms/power exercises, whatever the student is looking for.

Have them contact me if insterested-

Ya might ask Doc Stier in Austin if he knows someone to recommend in Houston.
