Kid's Kungfu in SF Bay Area?

Postby fuga on Mon Jun 16, 2008 3:44 pm

Kungfu Panda did its trick and now my daughter wants to try out a kungfu class. -rock-

Any recommendations for classes for a 5 year old in SF proper or Marin?

Thanks

I think, of these, only Tat Wong's school is in SF proper... but when I used to compete in tournaments in the Bay Area, these are a couple schools that I remember having a lot of young students. Don't have any personal experience with any of them though...

Thanks, Josh.

We went in today and checked out Tat Wong's school on Clement Street. She got a short private lesson with a teacher while the kid's sparring class was going on the next mat over. I am worried that perhaps she is too young and she will get bored of it after I shell out the dough. But she's a natural with her right leg and can squat down on one leg without a problem. She also seems to be more interested in hitting than blocking.

We are going to go back so she can try out a class, rather than a private lesson. I like the school because it is traditional kungfu versus the usual stuff floating around in malls.

tat mau is choy li fut. he has a good relationship with my teacher. should be good to try him out.

Doc fai wong is around somewhere--hung gar. Ask Omar if he can hook you up with him. he probably won't teach your daughter, but he may have students that would.

Omar knows a lot of the SF CMA peeps. try PMing him.

Thanks, Fong.

Doc Fai Wong is Choy Li Fat as well. Qiphlow learned his taiji from him. Omar studied with YC Wong. But I will PM him.

The Jack Dempsey method nice one. He always believed that focussing on getting dynamite in your punches is the place to start.

Pete, have you also considered turning it into a bonding experience with dad?

My niece told me she wanted me to teach her karate, so I teach her my "stuff." It's a mix of boxing, muay thai, the Shen Tiegen method and the Steve Morris method.

A few times a week I train her for about 20 minutes and teach her the fundamentals on a kitty bag, the mitts and some body method exercises. Basically I show her everything I wish someone would have shown me 10 years ago. It cuts into my training but she's 5 so after 20 minutes she's had enough. If she ever gets in a fight she's going to be a killer.

I think she wants to know how to take out bullies, but more than that I think it's also that she wants to spend some time with her crazy uncle.

It's a good time.

Great advice, Greg.

As nice as Tat Wong's school was, I am concerned about the attention span of a 5 year old. Not to mention that cost of the classes, the bridge toll and gas and commute twice a week.

One of the things that I really liked about his school was that it was a class of 5-7 year olds. Kids have more fun playing with others and motivate each other.

one thing i noticed from watching the kids classes at dfw's school is that all the young 'uns had next to no attention span, which is why it's good if the instructor knows how to make the training seem like a game. if the kids are having a good time, they'll be engaged the whole class.
are there no decent offerings up in marin?
