Blindside loose hand techniques for Wing Chun practitioners:

Most Wing Chun practitioners are dwelled on the unique development of sticking hands in controlling an opponent, and in a way sticking hands bridged the chasm between grappling and boxing. A bout of sticking hands will be the way to decide who is better between Wing Chun practitioners and without hurting one another. But this is not the case when fighting with someone who does not know sticking hands in a competitive situation for example. The aim of this seminar is to have a quick review of the techniques of Wing Chun in an open situation to enter into contact with an opponent where the closed range techniques becoming very efficient. Participants should have some knowledge of Wing Chun sticking hand.

There were the standard 22 san sau from Kulo Wing Chun and the 12 san sau from Yuen Kay Shan or Sum Nung or Guangzhou Wing Chun, but they are only for beginner to fight against non Wing Chun practitioners. And it is quite useless when fighting against Wing Chun practitioner because these techniques assume that the opponent does not have the adherent skill. These techniques also have the fault of turning too much sideway and exposed the blindside and they do not discriminate from left to right also put themselves into a vulnerable frontal position as well when turning from side to side.

The advantage of the Kulo Wing Chun practitioners is that they also train in the traditional Southern Shaolin Martial Arts with lots of trainings in traditional conditioning. The 22 san sau or 18 san sau taught in the 80’s in Hong Kong have had a very clear advantage over the other Southern styles. I think this is obvious because they are well versed in the southern techniques.
The advantage of the 12 sansau from Guangzhou Wing Chun according to Sum Nung was that he developed them in the 60’s in Guangzhou to train unionists to fight for territories. Those unionists were common laborers with muscles but without skill, and he taught them san sau in matter of months to prepare them for fighting.

On the other hand, Yip Man focused in the development of sticking hand which the other two styles missed out on. The neutralization skills that practitioners developed in sticking hand are very unique, and it has been further developed by Yip Man’s students and their students.
The blind side loose hand techniques workshop will capitalize of the 22 sansau, 12 sansau, sticking hands, routines, and wooden dummy techniques to include the following:

1. The watertight requirement in static frontal sticking hand situation
2. The skills of stepping, turning and shifting to the blindside in sticking hands
3. The Shoveling requirement in the training of wooden dummy to the blind side
4. The advantage of a springy dummy in training as an alternative of a sparring partner
5. The requirement of close up strike or inch punch
6. The basics of Wing Chun footwork in open fighting
7. The fighting posture
8. The entrance techniques
9. Various one-hand contacts and neutralizations such as Man Sau to Lap Sau, Tan Sau to palm strike, Bong to hammer strike or Biu Sau, Fook Sau to fist strike, reverse Fook Sau to Kau Sau, etc.
10. Various two-hand encounters
11. Encounters to kicks
12. Trapping and kicking
