PA Gao Baguazhang Post-Heaven Seminar, July 17th

Yizong Bagua Pennsylvania will be holding a Gao style Baguazhang seminar on July 17th in Folsom, PA. The seminar is an introduction to the Gao Baguazhang Post-heaven (後天 houtian) linear sets focusing on the first line, Qian (乾). Qian relates to the three solid line trigram, Heaven, and teaches the guiding principles or prototype of the system.

The curriculum will include the 8 combat forms and their relationship to the Pre-heaven (先天 xiantian) circular changes.
Form, theory and practical application will be covered.

The creation of our universe started as a singularity. This "one" then exploded with great force distributing matter evenly across the empty void. Although no discernible forms could be seen, the matter contained all the building blocks that were needed to create our vast universe. As the force of gravity merged this matter into shapes, the universe as we know it evolved. Along with the formation of the heavenly bodies, the force set into motion a spiral energy that is inherent in all things, both great and small. The Taoists knew nothing of the Big Bang and yet their concepts of Pre-heaven (xiantian) and Post-heaven (houtian) are amazingly insightful when used to describe the scientific concepts believed to explain the origin of the universe.

These same concepts are used as analogies to describe the forms in the Chinese internal martial art of Gao style Baguazhang. The Pre-heaven circular forms are sets of movements with no direct focus on usage. They train the body to develop spiral energy and ingrain in the student the specific attributes needed to use the art. Though they are without specific meaning, the circular changes contain infinite possibilities.

The theoretical and conceptual framework of the Pre-heaven circular changes is distilled in the Post-heaven linear forms and reinforced through 2-man sets, application drills and sparring. As these skills are honed, they are returned to the circle to bring the art to full fruition.

Baguazhang is a wonderfully complex movement art that instills in the practitioner skills both martial and healing. While the art is divinely effective, it can be difficult to interpret the meaning of its Pre-heaven circular forms and use them effectively in combat.

The Gao system and its Post-heaven linear sets gives the student the key to unlock the secrets that are hidden within the circular changes. The sets channel the Pre-heaven forms into more specific concepts and tools that can be more readily used and understood.


This seminar is open to practitioners of all levels. Beginners are very welcome to attend.
The seminar will run from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm with a break for lunch.
