Open Mat in London

Postby yusuf on Thu Jan 22, 2009 8:13 am

Hi

I have managed to access a room where we can spar. It is in a sports center in covent garden and not too expensive. Please can you let me know if you are interested in getting together to do an open mat..

I will set up three areas in the room ..

1) Boxing gloves (the big ones or Harbingers), headguard/mouthguard & cup obligatory. Light sparring / cooperative training. Anyone who is malicious or fucks up someone else in this areas will get the shit kicked out of them.
2) Optional protection, full sparring. Look out for yourself until you tap, at which point bystanders will stop it.
3) Weapons sparring. Sticks or rubber knives only. Unfortunately we can't use metal training knives or semi sharp weapons in the center. :( Cooperative since this is the only bit where the center manager went 'eep'.

Costs will be split by the participants. I will cover the extra costs for the first couple of months to ensure no one pays more than a tenner. Two silat guys, a Chow Gar student already committed. Frequency and start date depending on if we can get 10 people (to provide the variety we need.) The only proviso is if I can get mats and some insurance. Insurance highly likely, mats still a bit iffy. If we don;t get enough then it's back to 'plan a' and visiting a fight club in Paris.

cheers

yusuf ;D

Dude just come to Stevenage on Sunday.. it's a lot closer than Paris!

But yeah - I was planning to try and do my thing for last Sunday on a monthly basis. First Sunday of month I'm kinda commited to a mates training class in the mornings. But If you hook it up and I' can be free, I'll come down and have a bit of a play, for sure.

I'm kinda glad you're not gonna be using semi sharp weapons. It seems too much like tempting fate - accidents will happen, it's inevitable. Even metal training knives for sparring sounds more dangerous than is necessary.

Would you be padding up / head /eye protection - I'm just not sure i see the point of the pointy metal, if you plan on making reasonablely hard contact with it.. But hey if that's what peeps wanna do, I'll be more than happy to video it! :)
