when you misinterpret my words please don't blame me for that; or act like i said what you changed based on a faulty interpretation instead of taking my words as written ! (I know, this is the internet, but that doesn't mean you can put words in my mouth)

These are mostly drills from his family style of Shaolin (Feng Quan) . It has elements of Henan Shaolin, Tong Bei, and Hua Quan.

Shame about it only showing upper body. Would have like to see his footwork and stepping style. :)

From 1:01 to 1:13 it looks like he's doing the main action of slicing palm (tsiao I think?) from Gao bagua without the entry. Maybe V Fish could verify. Lots of CMA have the same moves though, obv. Just an observation.

Best,

S

Did anyone happen to notice the size of his arms compared to his body?
Looks like this guy continued to train hard well into old age. Good posture, balance and suppleness.

Thanks

Shawn: That is Pi Shan Zhang, from Tongbei. There is a very similar drill in many Bagua Systems.

It is called Pishan then Tiaoling.
I love the old school, no need for uniform, any dress and any time.

BTW anyone got clip of Zhou Jichun?

I was gonna say it looked eerily similar to some of the post-heaven palms from the line of Gao Bagua I practice.

Overlord: Actually, that was formal dress - back in the 1960's and 1970's many teachers wore a Western suit (or at least a button down shirt and tie) to do demonstrations. The whole silk pyjama thing did not really start until the late 1970's - and most teachers in Taiwan thought it was ridiculous.

Yes, Ken, the silk pyjamas, I still think, they are ridiculous, especially when prescribing 7 must have buttons of modern competitions.
So what was your training gear in those days?
We always had and still wear gongfu pants and T-Shirt, very casual, such older teacher in leather shoes (for ballroom dancing, lol), suit pants, and shirt are seldom seen nowadays!

But - I wonder if the old timers felt that suit pants were a bit hard to move around in (at least without ripping them)?

Also interesting how the silk PJs have seem to become adopted after time somehow, even in Taiwan.

One thing I do like about CMA is the lack of uniforms to be honest (although some teachers try to enforce them). I hate uniforms! :D

Shorts and sneakers in hot weather (sometimes a t-shirt, sometimes not). In cooler weather loose athletic pants and a t-shirt, sometimes a sweatshirt if it was particularly cold and damp. In the cooler weather you could see steam coming off of our bodies. Master Zhang taught wearing a t-shirt and slacks, low top sneakers. Mrs. Zhang taught wearing a track suit.

Other teachers were similarly garbed - Master Gao Daoshen would wear a pair of slacks and a t-shirt, sometimes sneakers, sometimes track shoes or leather shoes. Most other teachers were the same. Demos by the masters were usually formal attire - nice slacks, button down shirt, tie and leather shoes, or a Chung San Zhuang 中山裝 suit.
