My coach had a tear in the hip labrum, had surgery and has been 10 days at home.

He has persistently ignored and trained through injuries and this played a big role in this injury.

So while the doc may say that you will be okay to train, I'd consider 1) giving yourself the time to heal properly from both the injury and the procedure 2) see if you can determine what led to the injury and make changes in movement and habit to avoid a continued aggravation.

Good luck with it and let us know how it goes.

I tore my meniscus and went the rest and no training route (rather than surgery) and am back on the mats rolling after 6 weeks (though I am taking my time coming back).

my age thats the one advice I take really seriously - if they say 3 months off walking I'll just do 3 months of pullups :)
2) see if you can determine what led to the injury and make changes in movement and habit to avoid a continued aggravation.

from what I understood I was born with slightly atypical hip (approx. 10% of population has this kind of condition) then I kept cummulating very minor trauma from the years of doing MA, and now when it started manifesting - pain - I got it properly checked - MRI etc.
Supposedly after the bones are remodelled - the problem should be over.

Haven't watched all of this yet, but damn, it looks like good, solid, basics for playing open guard - a must watch for gi players!

Thanks Graham. Good open guard fundamentals. The video could use some editing though. The information is redundant at times. The 26 mins of video could have been reduced to 10 min IMO.

Here are his 6 principles for those that want to skip around:

1. If you open your guard, you'll play open guard. If your guard is opened, you're being passed. 2:30
2. Always maintain 4 points of contact. Make this your highest priority. 4:47
3. Your feet are your first line of defense. Your feet are your defense against your opponents pressure. 8:15
4. Your knees are your second line of defense. Your knees can neutralize pressure. 11:41
5. Third line of defense: Correct body positioning. Make the initiative to be first with your defensive positioning. 15:26
6. The reset. Get back to a point where you can work again. 18:24

I really like the idea of concept based Jiu Jitsu, but unfortunately everything they show just seems to be common sense you pick up naturally from just doing Jiu Jitsu....

Quick question for you Jitsheads.

Do you have a name for the version of spider guard where instead of holding both sleaves you have one sleave, a same side lapel and use your foot on the oppposite side bicep?

That Adem Redzovic 6 point strategy clip that was just posted recently has it in is logo. I thought it was pretty cool.
