Very nice stuff there. Anyone know the history of the lineage?
Thanks for posting.

Ma Jinlong in the video, with all due respect, is quite far from representing any Li style flavour.
His main style is Wu (northern) style which he practiced under the late Wang Peisheng.

Li Ruidong (1851-1917) learned Yang TJQ from Wang Lanting, the palace mgr of Prince Duan, who learned directly from Yang Luchan. He had previously learned several other boxing styles, and with Wang went on to learn more including Yue family style and Nei Jia Bagua Qi Men Quan. He supposedly agreed not to teach Yang family TJQ at Yang Banhou's urging, and (of course) went on to develop his own style mixing TJQ with the other arts he knew. He became a coach to Prince Rui, became a fourth rank guard in the Forbidden City, and taught wushu in Beijing etc. His TJQ has several forms including Five Star Boxing, Five Dragon Fist, Five Animal Fist, and some 13 sword forms. Ma Jinlong, in the video, is the chairman of the Li Style Taijiquan Association and the author of a book on the style, Li Style T'ai Chi Five Hammer.

Hmm, it did remind me a lot of Wu style... Kind'a like a mix of Wu and LHBF...
Can you maybe point to any clips that in your opinion are a better representation of Li style?
Thanks.

The only *acceptable* video on the web is that of Li Lianke here

And, yes, Ma's flavour comes from Wang Peisheng

Yes, looks "acceptable", but I see nearly every Taiji style in there, also Bagua and Xingyi, so where does this Li style come from, afterall?
Is it conneted to the line of Li Hexie (12th century) and Li Chankan (died 1953) and Chee Soo in GB?

Just curious!

Yes, Li style is a mixture of various things all revisited per Li Ruidong's understanding of Taijiquan.
There is Bagua from Wang Lanting (also a disciple of Dong Haichuan) and a less known form of Xingyi, and there is Shaolin too.
No relationship to the two Li you mention

We're waiting for the follow-up article. ;)

Thanks Tom.

I actually have a few articles almost ready but as I am working on a possible new periodical they are going to be "on hold" for another few months. There is a sequel to that article and more about the origins of Taiji and relationship to Daoism.
I'll probably rework them a bit too, as I don't want to create too much heat ;)

Serge Augier does it, but I can't comment on how true the flavor is since I know nothing of Li style. There used to be a clip up on his old site. It has a nice xingyi tiger pounce in it.

Most probably not the same style

"Li" is a very popular family name in China so there are various "Li styles".
Apart from Li Ruidong's the most popular are that related to Li Yiyu (a derivative of Wu/Hao style) and the other related to Li Jinling (a derivative of Yang style).

Yuen-Ming: that was a nice clip you posted.
Any leads on any good li style guys in Shanghai or Beijing (I'll be visiting both areas next spring and I would love to just meet a couple guys to see what they do firsthand).

Best
