I had to pour myself a big cup of coffee to read through that...but it was well worth it! Great article - thanks for sharing. It helped me understand the evolution of BJJ, the Gracie family, and the mysterious Acai berry.

Best,

This talk is really worth watching if you haven't seen it before:

I would post in the main video forum, since I think it's useful for all martial artists, but the kung fu nut-riders would just mangle the thread. ;)

On a related note, last night i was instructing and one of the chaps got an arm bar on another during the positional spar. I was telling him to capitalize but he just had this wincing look on his face and lost the armbar.

After the round he informed me that he had screwed up the position and was using one of his nuts as the fulcrum for the armbar ... :o ... Yikes...

Anybody know any good jiu jitsu games to teach in a kids class?

Dodge-ball, instructors throw and kids aren't allowed to stand up/must be on all fours at all times.

All kids stand in a circle around an instructor. He slowly spins in a circle with a padded stick. He can either swing high or low or straight down and changes direction. Teaches kids to jump, duck and dodge.

Human backpack. One person on all fours, other person human backpack, tries to stay on while other person bucks and moves around.

Both kids sit on floor, backs touching, race to see who can turn around to standing first.

Also, class divided into two team, kids on opposite teams are paired with numbers, lined up on different sides of the gym, a number is called and goal is to pick up an object in the center of the mat and get back to your team without being tagged

Yeah that's how they played it at our school. Gotta move fast (the instructors) so that the kids don't sit on sidelines for too long.

I'm not sure instructors didn't do it for themselves as much as for the kids... :) Everyone was going nuts, lots of fun and noise and insanity - in a good way. Also a very good thing (for the kids) to look forward to at the end of the class, it ends the whole thing with a big positive 'bang'.

The "crazy horse" thing they do (or at least did) sometimes during the regular class, just to test the kids' ability to maintain the position on the back/keep hooks in, etc.

Had the pleasure of attending a seminar with the Great Roger Gracie not long ago and since then have been hitting arm bars and triangles i would never have finished before.

Its amazing how 'simple' his style is. But how deep it goes ... Truly another level ...
