Last night got to work a bunch of stick grappling drills from closed guard: armbars, triangles, chokes and sweeps. Really interesting stuff and nothing like being cross choked with a stick!

Very grateful for all the excellent teachers I have access to at the moment.

Hitting people with a stick is not a martial art. :-P

Yeah that's part of the standard blue belt test. It comes right between the upa escape and the leg hook takedown.

This passes the Helio filter.

Such smooth transitions from throws to finishes and incredible timing on the foot sweeps.

Interesting talk -

"Great lecture on Long Term Athlete Development, not 100% BJJ specific, but the lecturer recently started BJJ. Very interesting if it is your sort of thing."

How often do you guys supplement with pure stand up training? By this I mean sparring on the feet with strikes, etc. and not going to ground at all.

I have recently started stick sparring and I get gassed after a two-minute round (versus grappling I can go 6- to 8-minute rounds and not feel like puking afterwards). An eye opener in terms of the different conditioning requirements.

i) never (hurrah!)

ii) lots of research to show conditioning is activity specific. Expect to get gassed if you change the activity.

I noticed that this video just got released yesterday, I think - I think it pretty much sums up/answers what you're asking?

Check out the most recent Eddie bravo radio podcast. I've only listened to the start (definitely nsfw) but listening to Eddie talking about how broken down his body is at 44. I'm starting to feel the aches and pains now. 3 times a week seems to be a good amount so you get rest days.
