I seem naturally built for a heavy pressure style of guard pass - this seems to work against big or small people, but what I've been finding lately is that it's not so effective against really flexible guys - either big or small - the just seem able to squeeze a leg underneath or around e pressure. Or if you double under that are happy to invert. Soon your attempts appear futile and that's when i think I need to change up my game to something more like what Lo does - that seems so much better against flexible guard players.

I was watching Gianni Grippo in Polaris 3 yesterday trying to pressure pass against a very flexible guard player, and that's when the realisation about this just struck me :)

Maybe it's not about big vs small - it's about dealing with flexible and not flexible?

Lo and behold! I wrote about my latest #BJJ hero - Leandro Lo, the master of the guard pass:

Why does Leandro Lo never get stuck in a knee shield from hell? - he just never seems to be in that position.

I mean like the sort of knee shield that Rafa/Gui Mendes use a lot, with the collar and sleeve guard:

Gui Mendes rolling with Luke Rockhold. I am impressed in how he controlled a monster like Luke.

There's also a video of Rafa rolling with Ben Dariush who must be several weight classes higher and he basically cuts him a new one - it's brutal:

Those guys are not human :)

The Mendes brothers are surreal, thanks for posting that video Graham. One thing that bothers me and its a small thing regarding this forum sometimes. You can post a video of someone like Gui CRUSHING guys more than twice their size with a fully resisting opponent, but a video with guys pushing hands gets more comments. Don't get me wrong I have felt guys like Serge put money where his mouth is, but he is the exception to the rule (also currently training under him) , while Almost any top level black belt does this on the regular and posts its online for everyone to see. Or like My Gym, Marcelo rolls with everyone. Why aren't more people here asking how this is Brazilian art is more tai chi than tai chi? Well rant over, please forgive me.

P.S. Polaris 3 was awesome, Poole was.....special...lol

lol - well this is a Tai Chi/XingYi/Bagua forum, so most people probably aren't interested in BJJ. It's interesting that BJJ actually delivers on the promise of a smaller weaker person beating a bigger stronger person. Better not point that out though lol ;D

Glad you enjoyed Polaris. Poole - yes, er.... ;D

I understand this is an ICMA forum. I love it for this very reason because I got to meet some real masters that can show the power of these arts (Sam, Serge, ect). But I don't understand how there are many guys here that practice BJJ who also practice ICMA, and other board members just dismiss the BJJ part of it. Feeling pressure from a Marcelo Garcia from top will make you believe there is more to BJJ than just wrestling on the ground with jackets. But i Guess as of now I am preaching to the choir. Wish there was more open mindedness. Maybe one day. ;D

Wait, 100kilos, are you in NYC? I'm newly arrived and I'm currently trying to figure where to train, both bjj and an kung fooey.

What I really noticed was the lateral passing (no slow grind but quick lateral movement with strong grips on the legs) and then setting up the lapel grip in the slide through position.

Interesting to see the variations of the cut through with both Lo and Mendes. I have been playing a lot more with the cut through. Interesting to see the differences in how they are passing and what they are setting up beyond the pass.
