Pete - That's one of life's mysteries....

Was impressed with young purple guy's ability to remain calm. Roy seems to answer this by letting them get the occasional tap...?

I see a necessity for all arts in fighting, as such I am interested in how all arts find ways to defeat other arts. That's not so strange is it? What other place to find BJJ answers , than a BJJ specific thread?

Takes the ego out of the equation real quick. In some cases, he let them get the tap early in the round almost as if to provide a reward for a certain pace of rolling.

Actually was a good article.

Despite all the guards, passing puzzles and competitions, I am getting drawn to making sure I have all the self-defense moves well drilled. Not the flashiest of stuff but all super solid. I am also increasingly interested in how the Dog Brothers material can overlay the jiu jitsu base.

That's cool. The Gracie Barra fundamentals syllabus all our schools train every week is full of basic self defence moves. It's good to keep doing this as I think it keeps you grounded, but personality I'm more of a Witch Doctor than an Attila. I like playing the game.

Interesting, you guys would ignore my query, maybe because I use such an extreme example, but it's about real fighting. A passage in the article states, if you hit a jits guy in the face once it degrades the belt, if you hit him in the face twice it degrades the belt twice, now I realize this is not to degrade as in insulting, but as in affecting the abilities of the player. This article basically talks about the difference between sport jits and defense jits. What I don't understand is why no one wants to address the very real possibility of facing someone who's main goal is to knock your head off ???

Have you watched the early UFCs? No time limit, no weight divisions, and almost no rules. If after watching those fights you didn't get your answers, I'm not sure what you're asking here...

I have not, guess theres some research to do , though my question was more about what you guys who practice the art would/can/have been taught do, rather than what you have watched done. I have seen demos of the guys practicing but I cant find any that move from stand up to the ground. I guess much the same way I /we complain there are no demos of what the TMA guys do from stand to the ground. without this understanding there will always be the circular debate.

the basics from the GJJ standard curriculum (starts with the stand-up stuff):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aeg926nPCGQ

The basic/general idea is to stay out of punching range, look for a clinch, bring them to ground, get some sort of positional advantage, finish.

This also addresses the "defense against boxer".

There are a couple of specific techniques (very simple and effective) against a sucker punch, a haymaker, etc. But all of it boils down to the above main strategy mentioned above.

P.S. You should watch the early UFCs, at least the first one or two. Entertaining stuff; people punching groin areas, elbowing back of the head, etc.

Thanks Dmitri, I was going to check out some early UFC stuff tonight when I get off work, I watched some but never with any true interest. Appreciate the clip as well, I was pretty certain it would be about distance.

Almost looked like a failed attempt to cartwheel pass. Whatever it was I would hardly think it was replicable.
