Guo Shi Lei teaching Ma Weiqi bagua

Postby Tom on Thu Jan 24, 2013 6:11 pm

Sorry folks, it was my fault for copying and pasting the link with phat fingers on a tiny smartphone screen. Plus aging eyes and tiny text. Plus maybe too much over the years of what haggis is marinated in, resulting in my brain somewhat resembling a sheep's stomach stuffed with various things (as Ken alluded).

It was this one:

Plus the one that npc kindly posted:

Probably too much haggis......

Tom I can't see anything either... unless...

The Tao is great because it is imperceptible.
It cannot be perceived because it is too simple.
It is simple because it is so great.

Thus it is circular, but has no edge.

The Tao is this:
Eat danger, shit victory.

He really moves nicely, explains well and seems to have effective tactics and techniques.

It is a bit of a pity that so, so many mainland CMA masters only ever do demos against unresisting (and usually static) partners, though. It would be more interesting if we could actually saw them doing something live. Su Dong-chen, for eg, has a very good clip up when he takes on 4 or 5 of his students and shuts them all down in a multiple attack scenario using live sparring as his demonstration vehicle.

it is an interesting problem. Unresisting opponent allows you to show particulars.

Resisting opponent allows you show skill in a moment.

I am having trouble thinking of to many clips that show both, and that bridge one into the other.

I think we all understand that in class laoshr shows subtle things to those who pay attention. Sometime he/she even shows obvious/dramatic things.

This is a lecture. It is to describe what differentiates baguazhang from other CMA. It is not a declaration of how badass this man is. Any of the baguazhang I have studied approaches an interaction form a different place, but I truly appreciate this interpretation. Will have to look more into him.

We actually do have some vids of us (his students) sparring with him. The problem is that he is so much better than we that we all look like clumsy amateurs when facing him, so I don't think the vids look very convincing. :p

He's also had a few fights against boxers, sanda guys, and MMA pros (or is it semi-pros?), but there aren't any videos. Anyway, those were mostly closed-door so it would not be right to post them even if we had them.

I see Tom has sneakily updated his OP with another video. ;)

FYI, that first vid is made up of bits from our first Singapore seminar series. All but one of the people demonstrated on in that vid were (at the time of the video) strangers to Shifu.

This man's students are lucky. 8-)
