Nice. I like the idea of seeing what you can achieve by relaxing separate joints - even when not connecting them to a centre ('hara').

I kind of think adding the label "internal power" to this brings a whole bunch of other preconceived concepts and expectations to the table that over complicate what he's doing with very simple (but not easy to do) actions.

One does not simply post on RSF.

Aikido can be a strange art, what was the point of the clip? It would have been helpful if he'd given it some context.

The following mantra is required to fully realize Gleason internal power:

A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything.

Bill Gleason has been training "aiki" with Dan Harden for about 6 years, and it really shows in his aikido waza. :)

To be honest, I don't think, that these skills that Gleason shows in the vid can be applied against a real attacker (even if he only violently grabs the wrist). This kind of IP is more or less a "Dojo skill", something that impresses willing ukes but is so over sophisticated that it falls apart as soon as speed and agressive intent come into play....

That is true of a "memorized waza"-based approach, but if someone trains IP to the point where he can carry himself in an "on" mode without losing the IP body qualities, he may be able to pull some of this stuff off. But I don't think that's the point here. I think that Gleason is using these techniques as teaching tools because aikido is an art, with a particular art agenda. I don't believe he intends everything to be martially applicable. He is teaching the Art of IP/Aiki.

Yeah, I don't think he's 'splaining stuff very well. Basically, he is trying to say that you have to be ready to change constantly as the moment dictates, while maintaining your six-directions structure. To demonstrate, he shows instances where he has to change his "energy" from Yang (propelling with peng force) to Yin (sucking or drawing in with absorbing of the Yin tissues... dantien) to resolve a potential blockage of force against force.

He uses some Chinese terminology and some Japanese, but the method is universal.

Here's a better clip of Gleason explaining concepts in practice.

If I would seek out a teacher to learn this kind of stuff, it would be Ikeda Sensei:
