As for the Tian Gan: This is ban (one of the few I know by name)
Xie Gua is a thrust sideways and up (kind of like "slanted flying" or "parting the wild horses mane") followed by a diagonal chop downwards. C.S. Tang has a video of a very soft version of the Tian Gan tht includes Xie gua - I believe the order of the movements is the same as what I posted above:
