Boxer Aamir Khan Candle Punching

Postby Mr_Wood on Tue Sep 02, 2014 5:10 am

Used to practice this years ago. 8 candles is quite impressive, although the gloves may have made it a little easier as more surface air to push.

Not convinced with 8 candles and gloves.

Are you suggesting there is some sort of camera wizardry at play here ? or just that its not impressive ?

Initially I thought it may have been stunt as they way the guy said 'ohh aren't you the fastest in the world' but then would he really put his reputation on the line like that with wacky candle tricks ? Seems legit to me. Just requires a lot of practice. But i've been wrong before :P

Seems pretty fake to me. It's an attempt at a viral marketing video.

From the description: "The footage was captured behind-the-scenes at a photoshoot where Khan was unveiled as RDX's newest brand ambassador."

Yeah, right.

What are the benefit of this training? More punching power?

Thanks :)

Mostly it teaches you to stay relaxed as its almost impossible to do without being so. Its really a teaching tool in itself as you can play around with different ways of issuing force and seeing if you can extinguish the flame. Then you can move away a few inches and play with distance. Then you can add candles.

If you think a perfectly relaxed strike with energy in a precise direction will be most effective at extinguishing the flame, so yeah, more energy efficient punching power is the goal. Its much easier to do with open palm and create a slight whip with the fingers at the end of the strike but this is cheating really and defeats the object of the practice.

Its also a good way to practice horse stance without becoming too bored.

Try it, it can be very frustrating but also learn a lot too. Cheers

The video itself may well have been a stunt and camera trickery as to do 8 in a row is quite a feat but the practice itself is a legitimate one dating back many years.

As you can see from this video, this lad has got the knack of it and no camera trickery involved. So with this in mind its not hard to imagine how a world class boxer like Aamir Khan can do the same if not better.

This was so easy to disprove! C'mon people...

In HD it's quite evident he's blowing air, before and after the punch. By pausing the video right before and after one can notice how he inflates the cheeks and blows the air. In the following image I captured, you can see:

- The cheeks inflated.

- Blowing air.

- Punch is already returning, but the third candle is yet to be affected, and the second one not yet extinguished.

James Randy once debunked a guy who could make the pages of a book 'move at the power of his mind'. He developed a method to blow air very accurately with a lot of force without his face showing it at all :-)

Not sure why Khan needs to prove anything here. He can punch as hard as almost any Welterweight boxer in the world and other than perhaps Mayweather, he could well be the fastest. Are there any authentic traditional exercises he could do though to strengthen his ability to take a good shot to the chin as that has always been his Achilles heel...

Could be a trick, but I'm not sure it could be done with the breath. I doubt there's enough velocity. Otoh, that could be measured, and then replicated mechanically. It's something for Mythbusters.

If you think you need to blow air with the mouth to do this u don't understand much about physics or punching
My teacher taught me how to do this in 5 minutes
Admittedly I have never done this with more than one candle
Simply because once I could do it I never bothered again

I played around with it for a few days last year just to see if it was any easier now I feel my movement is more relaxed, and it was, I never thought to add candles, just increased the distance standing from the candle. Like Wayne said, no need to practice this more than a few times, it definitely has it's limits and time is better spent on other training once you know it. Yeah I think blowing out all those candles would be equally if not more impressive than punching them out.
