Chang Shi Rong Part 1

1960s footage of Chang Shi Rong (Chang Shih-Jung) performing his version of the Yang style form. Chang features in Robert Smith's Chinese Boxing under Teachers in Southern Taiwan. The rolling shifting of weight derives from his practice of Bagua Zhang. Chang's main teacher was Zheng Huai-Xien who was an older disciple of Sun Lu Tang and a key member of the Republic of China martial arts team in 1936.

Ciao Bob,

IMHO
I don't like the performance.

I see that the master have the body of good training.
Many Times the arms are not in armony with the body/legs perhaps a choice to hide the skill.

The step forward is also a technique of Hao style.

Nothing wrong with his arms he is just practicing big circles
He double weights at times
The follow step is a part of yang style although not taught to all
I like some of his variations especially after fan thru back the big arm bar and squat
Thanks for posting
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

personally i think he might be doing a public form

my teacher learned from him
and the form is different from what is shown here
lots of other variations of the movements
(the variations seem to emphasize usage)
much more active stepping and changing the feet
(i thought this variation might be unique to my teacher- but i have seen videos of some of his kung fu brothers (also students of Zhang CiLong) and they do it the same way with the weight shifting and the same variations of the moves- so I am pretty sure that it must come from Zhang CiLong-- which would make this the public or standard frame that is shown in the video- cause its not what we really train...)

I wish there was some public video of Zhang CiLong's Xingyi and Bagua...

Ciao Hansen,

In Practise Tai chi , if you do Small or Big circle the hands and wrist must be precise, in that video i don't see this.

IMHO

I make an example.

it is impossible/hard to mix a different strategies, it is the same if i want to play French game or sicilian game in chess in the same time, are the same game of chess but different mind.

The mind is not in peace , the mind is in a caos/not clear.

In tai chi there are no strategies only principles and trained skill
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Indeed,

I have not spoken about the body, I refer about a state of mind.

Training body is easy, compared to train the mind, this also applies to the Tai chi.

In reference to the video, i wanted to say that if there is not harmony, the mind is not quiet.

The body is the instrument you use to train the mind. How you train the mind/spirit depends on the art you study. Fingers, guitar, mind or mind, fingers, guitar. Guitar music being the expression of the art. Its never easy to train the body. :)

I liked the clip. Solid, powerful movement.
And BTW, You can see the same stepping and some other details, like the single whip variation, in other performances from Yang stylists and also from Chen style if you look at older clips. There's no influence from Hao or Bagua here, just old school Tai Chi.

In reference to the video, i wanted to say that if there is not harmony, the mind is not quiet.

Maybe he didn't like to perform for the camera very much? ;)
