He looks like a mediocre dancer to me, no power, movement weak. :)

Give the guy a break. The guy must be over 80 at the time of filming.
And Wan Laisheng was known to be a scrapper. He was against the "flowery fists" of many of his contemporaries.

If he wanted a break he should have been sitting in a rocker smoking old man opium and not showing what he appears to have lost according to legend. ::)

Hi guys,
Well, I’m not a big fan of the legend about Wan laisheng but it’s a part of Chinese culture to make legend about them master it’s a part of dream , a part of “ marketing” but Wan laisheng was really a young passionate man about wushu .
At the age a 20, he wrote Wushu huizhong , who is one of the more wushu books in wushu even now.
But he was not a monk, he was a man as any other master, and he did have is hard time, got in prison, even try to killed himself in prison, he became an opium man too…

The video from the source I have was made without any preparation, it’s some journalist who came to his place and asked him to make a video before he got to old.

My respect go for him, because after all the misery he got in his life, he still practice at his age, his still love what he do, and he still remember all the form that he practice … I’m not judging is level at more than 80 you, I’m respecting him for an old guy, who still love what he do and still practice it every day!

For me that’s real thing, even what happen in your life, you still ready to show your practice even at his age! If you take a video of yourself, and try in 3 days to make all the form you know on a video at his age I will respect you too.

Sorry for my English wish you got my meaning;-)

AFAIK there is a definite back story to this video ... that is all i will say.

Looking at the skills present in Wan Lai Sheng's inheritors I have no doubts about his superlative skills.

I don't remember the exact details so don't want to say something incorrect. But the above is part of it as i understand it ... i hear it was more of a 'you must do this' from the PRC rather than an polite invitation ...

That's sad if he was forced to demonstrate for the camera. I will always respect him and hope if and when I'm around at that age, I can still practice daily and enjoy what I am doing.

Wan Laisheng was certainly the man.

The Ziranmen guys on this board, or someone like Serge Augier, could give you more of his life story, but as has been mentioned he lived a very hard long life.

One of the earlier poster's got it right in that the video was an old school party production of "you will do this."

That said, it is great to see someone of his age and background still getting down. Apparently he was still running a few miles a day into his early 80's.

Alex Kozma published a book called "Ziranmen" a few years back that gave biographies of all of Wan Laisheng's teachers that was pretty amazing. While a lot of these guys would have been considered mass murderers today, I felt it gave incredible insight into where these arts originally came from and a picture of a period in time that was largely lost to history when the West went through similar things.

Wan Laisheng was definitely a unique man and in many ways a figure out of time. The fact that he lived as long as he did considering what he survived is truly amazing.
