Taiji Tested (this time for real)

Postby Kettlebells4U on Sun Nov 09, 2014 6:27 pm

Just saw this video of Chen ZiQiang doing allout grappling with a much heavier, younger and (muscular) stronger guy. As you can see the,Chen totally dominates his opponent:

A very impressive display of internal strength!!!

I wonder what the others here think?

Royce Gracie would have choked him out. Also, it wasn't truly internal.

Now that's out of the way, I really enjoyed the clip. Thanks for posting. I'm going to his seminar next week-- I was just going to go one day, but now I'm tempted to go two days so I'll have an opportunity to get a second helping of whoop-ass.

Not sure what the other guy's background was but
(1) That looked like a real MA space, not a "TaiChee dojo" and
(2) The large lad was obviously going at ZQ.

But as I have been saying since around 2006...ZQ is supreme in this format. He does it every day, with all comers, he loves it and is very good at it.

He trained for years with a mate of mine who was large (over 6 feet, around 200 pounds) and a former bouncer. My mate said that never once did he throw ZQ, and they went at it every day.

BHassler:

At his seminar, suggest you ask:
(1) To "feel" his shoulder strike; and
(2) How things change when striking is added to the mix.

Seemed to be a bit of acting when he hit the ground
Even that last throw when he hardly hit the floor he acted like he had been hit by a truck
Still not convinced
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

What is the rule set for something like this? Is there a rule about not going for the legs?

Nice. Chen is definitely good at what he does -- stand-up grappling a la free-style Taiji PH.

I'm dying to see how he'd fare against a free-style wrestler who shoots for his legs or a BJJ guy who wants to drag him to the ground under MMA or Jujitsu rules.

+1

Definitely some acting involved. He wants to make Chen look even better than he is.

Next time someone goes to his seminars maybe it would be a good idea to bring a skilled Judoka of CZQ's size and get an answer to our 7 billion dollar question after all these decades. The challenge can be just grappling behind closed doors but at least some of us can see the result and they can tell us how it was. It's really that simple...

Who was that guy who played with Marcelo Garcia? Whoever he is, im pretty sure he is nowhere near Garcia's practical experience. It kinda becomes a matter of individuals, rather than respective MA styles, no?

I think he was a push hands champion.

"Tuishou" Chen Chi-Cheng (Shi Zhong Tai Chi College), the reigning 10-year world champion outscores Taiwanese star player Rick "The Bruiser" in this Fixed Step Push Hands match at the 3rd Tai Chi World Cup.
